INTERVIEW: Lydia Ford

Hi Lydia, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you! Good, very busy making music which has been fun.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “idwbygf”?

It’s about realizing you’re stuck in this toxic pattern with someone where they only want you when you aren’t available or pretend you’re not interested. My mom complains that I write too many sad songs but this one is actually pretty upbeat!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Everything I write is from experience. I was feeling pretty frustrated that I’d found myself in that playing hard to get type situation again and the lyrics just came to me!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

No plans for this single but definitely want to make a video again soon.

How was the recording and writing process?

Very seamless! I wrote the chorus first on a walk one day and put it into the notes in my phone until I was ready to flesh it out into a full song. I don’t always play guitar on my tracks anymore so I was excited to come up with a few riffs for IDWBYGF that really helped move the track along.  I was visiting home at the time so I recorded in my parents house and sent it off to my mixing engineer in Berlin.

What role does Ireland play in your music?

The music industry and community in Ireland is pretty small but incredibly welcoming. Even though pop isn’t the main genre they’re known for producing, they’ve given me a lot of support and confidence going forward to create more music.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes! I have an EP called “Bad Things” finished and ready for the world. We’re just wrapping up the artwork and promo plans etc. right now. I’m really proud of it, there’s a lot of variation in the tracks so there’s a little something for everyone.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The plan is by late November all going well.

Any plans to hit the road?

Not just yet but we’ll see how the EP is received!

What else is happening next in Lydia Ford’s world?

I finished the EP in September so I’ve moved onto writing material for release in 2020 and making plans to play more live shows.
