PREMIERE: VT-based indie rock band Couchsleepers Release New Single “In My Head”

Today we are pleased to join forces with Couchsleepers to premiere their new single “In My Head,” which tells the story of two people who can only find happiness together in their dreams. And it feels like the kind of dream you wouldn’t want to wake up from.

I think I saw you last night for about the thousandth time

I was waiting by the balcony when you went walking by

And I thought I saw something soften when you stopped and met my eye

Then I woke up to the cold bed

It’s the same thing every night

While similar in instrumentation to the band’s first release, “Want” — swelling guitar lines, punchy horns, and frontman Harrison Wood Hsiang’s earnest vocals —, “In My Head” carries the band’s sound into the realm of downright danceable pop. Yet, despite the upbeat energy of the piece, there’s the sense of something sinister below the surface. The devotion of “In My Head” is an impossibility; happiness sacrificed to cling to something that cannot be.

I’m always counting forward to a future I can’t hack

Sometimes I hope we’ll be together because I’m always looking back

And there’s a thousand different reasons that’s fucked up and I know that

I don’t care if it’s the right thing

I just always want you back.

With “In My Head”, Couchsleepers has established a clear voice for itself, pitting narrative storytelling against earworm melodies and a full-bodied band that weaves between conversation and exclamation. When asked about their sound, Hsiang simply described it as “a soundtrack for restless nights.”
