I’ve been great thank you – Fresh home from Ibiza so I have severe holiday blues but otherwise I’m on top form!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Help”?
Help is a record I wrote detailing my views on the countries current state with a view to encouraging people to embrace change. I feel like there’s a real need for deep change in society and that this can be achieved via compassion and seeing ourselves in other people’s shoes. I directed the video to reflect this by playing a number of different characters you would encounter in London day to day. Asher and I worked together on the hook and he really bought the track to life – we also have another big record coming v soon!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
With Brexit on the horizon it feels like everything is doom and gloom – Help is a track to raise spirits and encourage reflection.
Did you intend to go political with this song or it just rather evolve into this?
I’m not a political guy in any sense but by highlighting issues, relaying my experiences and shooting in the locations we did it quickly became a politically charged anthem. It wasn’t intentional but I did want to make it very obvious what I was getting at!
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
I worked on the video with Simon Aukes who I have worked with in the past and is always my first choice with anything visual – It’s the first time I have directed a video but I felt like I wanted more creative control of the visuals and although an extremely stressful day (filming from 8:30am – 12:00am) I’m really happy with the result.
How was the recording and writing process?
I recorded the record at Hatcham studios in south bermondsey with Kaey (producer) and a number of different session musicians – we really wanted to get real instruments on this record and so we had live drums, guitar, piano and a violinist all play on the track. Once we were happy with the mix we headed to Abbey road to master the track with one of their engineers – I love working at abbey road and always get the best sounding masters from them!
What role does London play in your music?
I live in London so the inspiration is all around me – everyone who I work with and have built my career with is London based so Its a huge part of who I am now and i’m grateful to live in such a mad city!
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
It does indeed Help is the first single taken from my debut 8 track E.P Belief which is set for release at the end of January 2020 – there will be two more singles this side of the year with one dropping each month in the run up to the E.P release.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m looking to get back out on the circuit early in 2020 and I’m using this lay off to develop the music and focus on getting the tracks out!
What else is happening next in Ben Hunter’s world?
I’m currently directing and shooting the next video on October 30th which is really exciting and i’m sure is going to be very different to anything you’ve seen before – Also having singing lessons and focusing on my voice so expect singing/rapping on the E.P. Other than music I’m a keen boxer and i’m currently training to fight again at the end of January next year !
