5 Things to Look for in a Local Moving Company

Are you relocating soon and need a reliable moving company that won’t rip you off? Whether you’re moving to a different neighborhood or another city, it’s easy to miss the mark if you don’t know how to sift through movers.

You should be especially careful when hiring moving companies to handle a state-to-state move. Whoever you hire needs to have a great track record of happy clients, and strong insurance policies.

Here are 5 essential things to look for in a local moving company for a smooth, uninterrupted, hassle-free move.

1. Good Reputation

A good reputation is the first thing to look for in reliable movers. This includes their experience, years in business, online reviews, transparency of information, website/online presence, customer service, and quality of services.

You should also assess the way they communicate with potential customers. Are they available to answer questions or reply to emails? Do they ask for large deposits or have unusually low quotes? These are all red flags you should be wary of before you hire the cheapest company.

2. Proven Track Record

A moving company is only as strong as its track record of satisfied customers. You can learn about this via online reviews, recommendations, or testimonials. Find recent movers and contact them to ask about their experience.

Check the Better Business Bureau to see the status of the company or use the Department of Transportation tool to review the companies’ complaint history.

3. Recommendations

Recommendations from people you trust can save you hours of research and tons of money. Ask family and friends for their preferred local moving companies, write down the information, and compare the results.

Gather as many recommendations as you can and research these companies online. This is the best way to find movers now instead of spending days in hesitation.

4. Licenses and Insurance

Do not hire movers that don’t have the necessary licenses to work and that are not covered by proper insurance policies. If something goes wrong during the move, you want to make sure you’re protected. Even then, ask for everything in writing and have them assess the workload in person rather than quote you over the phone.

Be especially careful with state to state movers, as they’ll be covered by different licenses and insurance policies. Some companies may move your stuff into a storage unit and ask for extra money to release it to you.

5. Transparent Rates

Once you contact the moving company for a quote, you’ll receive an estimate that doesn’t usually reflect the final price. Things like additional packing services, materials, moving large objects, and other add-ons can influence the price.

The company must be open and straightforward about any extra, additional, or hidden fees. If they’re not, take your business elsewhere, get a free moving quote now.

Now You Know What to Look for in a Local Moving Company

Finding a local moving company with great reviews and a proven track record is easy with these tips.

Do your own research, ask friends and family for recommendations, and start packing for your big move.

  1. Thank you for your tip to only hire movers that have licenses and the proper insurance. My brother wants to do some interior design but he needs to have the stuff shipped to him. I’ll let him know he should find a moving company that has the right licenses and insurance so his new things stay protected.
