INTERVIEW: Tamaraebi

Welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Really good, very busy at the moment with music being released there has been a lot of promo work, video shoots etc. All good though!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Heaven’s Gate”?

Heavens gate was recorded 2 years ago, one of the first songs I made but also the title of the EP. It felt like the right time to release this song.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It’s about being accepted into heaven despite feeling rebellious on earth or doing things that are “bad” but you were forced into the situation. For example, if a girl is unfaithful to you, you might want to go and be unfaithful in return as an act or revenge. So basically apologising and saying “it wasn’t my fault”.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

This was my first music video and it was so exciting. We really wanted to get a good mix of rustic church vibes and also that modern neon look too so I’m happy with it.

Why naming the record after this song in particular?

This song sets the mood for the EP and generally tells the story for the EP the best.

How was the recording and writing process?

As I said this song was made a few years back. We had an idea for the story of the song and wanted it to be big musically hence the guitar solo and big drums which I love, so yeah we enjoyed playing around with the live band feel.

What role does Nigeria play in your music?

It plays a big part in terms of my writing but I also spent time growing up in various other parts of the world so my music has influences from all over.

How your upbringing has influence your writing?

The main influence from my upbringing other that the places I lived is going to church. I started singing in church so if it wasn’t for being brought up in church my music wouldn’t exist!

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

A lot of the time trying to base the songs on real life experiences. Quite often when in the studio we would talk a lot before we start making music to share experiences and find a mood for the song.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes, I had a headline show in May to celebrate finishing the EP, we are now planning to do another and hopefully I can support some other artists along the way. My next show is likely to be December so keep your eyes peeled.

What else is happening next in Tamaraebi’s world?

Music music music. I am in the studio still every day unless I’m doing a video shoot/press etc. I basically live in the studio. While we have momentum I really want to just get as much music out as possible.
