INTERVIEW: UK Songwriter Eloise Viola

Hi Eloise, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Busy busy but well thank you! Been working hard on my live performance as I had a show recently and also still writing a lot so it’s been a bit manic but I’m loving it.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Wait In Line”?

YES! Wait in Line is a really fun, catchy tune about not compromising or feeling like you should ever come second to anyone.  It’s a sassy song that I hope empowers people to always put themselves first, feel able to question behaviour that they don’t like and also have a dance around the kitchen with their mates!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I have found a bit of a running theme with all sorts of relationships I have with people in my giving too much. Sometimes I think you can fall into the trap where you don’t realize you’re giving so much that you are losing yourself… so Wait in Line is a but of a reminder to me that I should always remember to put myself first, especially if someone else isn’t and is putting someone else in front of me.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

The video for Wait in Line was out last week! I had this idea not ‘waiting in line’ to the extreme, and have the whole video centered around me being a housewife, waiting around for a man; doing his laundry, making him dinner and waiting for him to get home. The video is fun and tongue-in-cheek, halfway through the mood changes and everything descends into chaos. I really enjoyed coming up with the feminist-y type themes and filming this video, and I was very lucky to have a cracking (almost) all female team on set with me too.

How was the recording and writing process?

I wrote this song with two incredible producer/songwriters that I also wrote ‘Think About You’ with. It was actually incredibly lucky for me to have found them. We have now created a really strong writing team together, and have finished a number of new songs with them that I can’t wait to share! They are really fun and talented, and I feel really grateful to be able to get in a room with them and to be able to talk about really deep concepts and also cry with laughter in the same day.

What role does London play in your music?

I really love London! I moved here just under a year ago and I have found it has been really inspirational in that I meet new incredible people very frequently who have different backgrounds and stories to share. I am always looking out for anything and everything to inspire me to writeand also new opportunities that I can learn from.

How has Janis Joplin influenced your writing?

Janis Joplin is one of, if not my favorite artist of all time. It’s more her voice that has inspired my voice and also the raw emotion in her songs and live performances that inspired me to sing and to ensure every time I perform it is expressing the emotions I felt when I first wrote the song. I think she also had an incredibly sad and tragic story, and I wonder whether if she loved herself a little more whether her life and story would have ended up the way it did. I want to make sure I write music that empowers people, especially women, to love and back themselves for exactly who they are.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Very excited to say yes you can expect a lot of new material. My songs have had a strong focus recently which is just got stronger with time and now I have lots of finished songs that I am really proud of, and desperate to share with the world!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

My EP is out on Friday and it’s called I AM ENOUGH. This is a title that took me a while to come up with, but I wanted to make sure the title really reflected the overall meaning of the collection of work that is on it. Self-love and body positivity are both goals that I am trying to reach for myself, as well as help encourage in others, and the EP title is a reminder for me to keep pushing to reach that goal.

Any plans to hit the road?

Performing live is my favourite part of my career and refocuses me every time to why I am doing this and makes it all worth it. I currently don’t have anything solidly planned with regards to touring but I am expecting to have some big live shows and hopefully to tour next year.

What else is happening next in Eloise Viola’s world?

I am still working hard on new content as well as preparing for the next release and how best the songs can be reflected in music videos and campaigns for future next releases. I have also just teamed up with a swimwear brand called ‘We Are We Wear’, a brand created by women, for women they have completely unretouched real models with real bodies. I have just been made their Body Positivity Ambassador and I am so excited to see where the collaboration leads and hope to do more work in promoting body positivity and self-love/care going forward.
