INTERVIEW: Dan McKie

Hi Dan, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey thanks for having me. I am good, busy as always. But good.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The Punisher”?

We can.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I was watching The Punisher on Netflix and I found this vocal when I was trawling the sample libraries. And it fit perfect with the beats and it sort of remind me of the show, Not sure why ha.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

No plans of yet.

How was the recording and writing process?

I do the same with most tracks. I start with a kick and hats. Then find a bassline, that gives me a groove then start adding percussion, synths around that and then FX. Sometimes I end up with a completely different bassline once I get my groove on. But I always need a good groove to get any kind of synth elements in there & vocals. Then once I am happy with it all I hit the arrangement, of which I am pretty quick at doing as I colour coordinate everything in my OCD way then I can build it visually. Then when I have a basic arrangement I start listening through and adding, swapping bits and deleting bit. A very key thing to getting an arrangement right is to be able to subtract elements so the groove and tracks flows.

What made you want to go a much Latin vibe?

Nothing in particular. I wanted a techy track and started playing with some tribal elements and the rest happened. I never go to make a track with a vibe in mind, maybe a genre but never a vibe, if that makes sense?

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

Depends on the person. I like to either get a groove from them or send them something I am working on. I love working with different people as it just adds different flavors. Some people are bit more anal that others and sometimes that effects the flow of things and some people are bit more messy which effects my flow haha.

What role does the UK play in your music?

None I don’t think, I hope that I am influenced from all kinds of music from all kinds of walks of life. Be it rock, pop, indie, jazz, dance, house, techno or disco from berlin, USA, Spain, UK etc. I hope that my mind is open to all of this.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I have several tracks already scheduled and more I am working on, remixes and originals. So collaborations with some great upcoming guys as well as established guys. Watch this space.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

10.01.20 – Frei – Who We Are (Dan McKie Remix) [We Are Phonik]

Any plans to hit the road?

I am always open to gig offers 😉 I love DJing, it’s my first love. I have some gigs planned on ADE, Barcelona and some tentative dates in the UK to finalise. I love to play in Germany, across Spain, Netherlands as I have a good following via Spotify from these regions.

What else is happening next in Dan McKie’s world?

Many things, running my labels, working on new tunes, watching the demise of my beloved Manchester United and spending time with my daughter and my little family.
