Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Vain”?
Our manager said it’s like The Killers vs The Doors mixed by Pet Shop Boys. We wanted to mix things up a bit and make the synth take the lead musically to keep things interesting. It’s a song about relationships but not in the conventional sense. It’s more about how you’re never going to please everyone so try not to worry about it. Things will probably be alright.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I don’t think it’s centered on anything in particular but maybe we’re projecting our past relationship woes without realizing haha.
Do you have a video on the way?
Yes! Hoping to have it all wrapped up in the next few weeks.
The single comes off your new EP Impostor Syndrome – what’s the story behind the title?
Impostor Syndrome is becoming more recognized as a condition these days and a lot of people have suffered from it at some point without really knowing about it. It’s really quite fascinating how so many of us will second-guess ourselves and whether we truly belong. As a band we’ve accomplished some great things so far but we’re still human and have occasional moments of doubt. Attaching the title to what we feel is our most impressive release to date gives us a sense of ownership over it and reminds us to keep pushing on.
How was the recording and writing process?
John and Mikey come up with the rough idea on acoustic before writing out a rough score on the laptop. After that we go into the rehearsal rooms and flesh it out with the full band. Once we’re happy with it we fire down to Mark Morrow in his Granton studio to get everything tracked. Each track on the EP was recorded months apart so we’ve managed to get the whole process down to a pretty good routine.
What role does the UK play in your music?
The UK is where we all first experienced live music as young punters for various bands (some cooler than others haha) We listen to music from all over the world but it’s our own back yard that we cut our teeth on with regards to the live circuit.
How has Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin influenced your writing?
Mikey has been known to exhibit many Gilmour-ish tendencies while soloing. John is a big fan of Plant-esque screams.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
There’s not really anything in particular that causes it. You just hear a hook in your head and you get it down.
Any plans to hit the road?
We’re very much in the camp of “if you book us we will come” so yeah definitely want to hit the road in 2020.
What else is happening next in DMS’ world?
We’re supporting As December Falls at The Garage in Glasgow 11th October. John and Mikey are heading to the states early November so expect plenty of random Insta stories from the band page! Once they’re back we have the single release followed by the EP launch party at Cab Vol in Edinburgh 23rd November. International EP release the week after… There’s talk of a secret gig coming up too so keep an eye on our FB for more info on how to get involved!
