Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Breathing Underwater”?
Kota: “Breathing Underwater” was a song that I wrote in the midst of a storm of writing tons of new music. No other song really stuck, but Tommy and I both really thought this one had potential, so we finished it and brought it to life together. It features lyrics themed around the ocean and water, so we channeled that into the sound of the song as well. I wanted the song to feel cinematic, as the lyrics are a powerful telling of survival and finding your place in the world, even if it means learning to breathe underwater to be with the one that you love.
Tommy: Kota was sending me tons of new song ideas at the time, but as soon as I heard the piano chord progression for this song, it really spoke to me and I was like, “Yes! This is the one we need to do next”‘ and then a flood of ideas just naturally flowed.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Kota: I often start with an instrument in mind, and that day I was inspired to write a song on piano. The mood that I wanted felt dark and stormy, so I titled the pro-tools project “Mermaids”, and let the theme guide me.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Kota: Definitely! We have a video set to be released in September!
How was the recording and writing process?
Kota: This one was super special to us because we completely self produced it from start to finish, and brought it to life one piece at a time. It was our first time as just the two of us in the band, so we called in help from our friend Justin DoCanto to write the drum parts, which were all programmed in. In the end we couldn’t be happier with how it all came together!
Tommy: Writing-wise, the song came together really quickly and then it was just a matter of adding all the extra layers in the production.
What role does LA play in your music?
Kota: Tommy and I lived in LA for years, but now we’re in the mountains outside of LA, and I’d say that the inspiration of the forest has changed us and our sound. Now that it’s just the two of us with an in-home studio, we went from an LA rock band, to a more evolved sound that’s coming to life in new ways. We can’t wait for you guys to hear what’s next!
Tommy: I think the serenity and seclusion of having our own studio in the forest outside of LA has inspired us to explore a new direction with our music and I’m excited for where our sound is heading next.
How do you go on blending your love for Fantasy with Rock music?
Kota: I’ve always been a writer, words are my favorite mode of expression, so tying fantasy themes into my lyrics has always been something I’ve done. I tend to base songs off of books, movies, TV shows, and art that inspires me, so it’s a natural fit.
Tommy: I think both of us have always loved trying to blend various epic, cinematic, ethereal and spacey sounds into our music. Personally, I read a lot of science fiction, so I often picture epic cosmic inter-galactic landscapes in my mind when I’m writing.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Kota: Yes! We’ve got a lot in the works, we’re evolving into a completely new sound, blending more organic and moody vibes together in a more minimal way. We’ve been a rock band from day one, but in the coming year we’ll definitely be bringing a new sound to the table.
Tommy: I’m pretty excited with the new sounds we have in the works, blending more minimalist sounds with a modern rock feel.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Kota: We have so many projects in the works right now we don’t know when they’ll be ready, but we’ll definitely be working hard the next few months!
Any plans to hit the road?
Kota: Once we finish up writing as many songs as we can, I would love to tour with the new sound and new songs! The stage is my favorite place to be!
Tommy: Definitely! We’ve recently played a couple of shows with the new stripped-down sound and we’ve gotten amazing feedback.
What else is happening next in Bad Wolf’s world?
Kota: We’re really excited to release a super special cover song in the coming months, which may or may not feature some vocals from a special guest!
