As we keep up with our series of premieres, we are joining forces with the talented singer-songwriter Sarah Haines for the release of her new single “Break My Heart,” the very drum driven, minimalistic break up song captures the melancholic spirit of the song with its blend of low-key music and poignant vocals.
About the song, Sarah comments “Break My Heart is a confessional love song that derives its power from its vulnerability. It’s a bit of a “something I wish I had said when I had the chance” song, and it’s unapologetic in its pessimistic romanticism.”
Trained as a classical violinist and violist and influenced by a wide range of music – Florence and the Machine, Tom Waits, Laura Mvula, Laura Marling and My Brightest Diamond for starters, with a side of all of the pop music of the late nineties and early aughts, and a dash of big band jazz for good measure — Sarah Elizabeth Haines’ journey into the world of contemporary sounds has been equal parts exploratory and inevitable.
Sarah has been hanging around in the New York City scene for years as a member of bands Emanuel and the Fear and Bellehouse; the release of her record Pretending to Sleep on November 8th will mark her debut as a solo artist. As a string player, Sarah’s music career has mainly been as the consummate sideperson, recording for artists like Jherek Bischoff, Guards, Todd Almond (with Courtney Love), Aberdeen, Mackenzie Shivers, Little Kruta, Contemporaneous, and playing with various off- and Broadway musicals; she’s thrilled to add some original music to the discography. Most of the songs on Pretending to Sleep were written and given final touches on the road while she’s been touring with the hit musical Hamilton; some of the songs even utilize the talents of the string quartet with whom she tours, adding a lushness to the already harmony-rich soundscape. Combined with her searing, honest lyrics and carefully spare production (masterfully done by Kevin Salem), there’s a refreshing, direct originality on her debut record Pretending to Sleep, out everywhere November 8th, 2019.
