Where Sports Betting is Already Legal in the United States

Many Countries have already legalized sports betting in their territories. Europe is one of the countries that enjoy sports betting big time. However, in the U.S sports betting is not yet embraced by all states. As of now, there are only 13 states that have allowed this in their territories.
Before May 2018, there was a federal ban on sports betting in the U.S. This started in 1992 when the PASPA or The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was passed. The PASPA Law only granted immunity to four states that were already allowing sports betting in their territories. These states are Nevada, Delaware, Oregon, and Montana.
On May 14, 2018, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a decision of reversing the ban. This was triggered when the state of New Jersey decided to challenge the legality of PASPA. The Supreme Court brought PASPA down with a full vote of 6-3.
Punters and bookies surely rejoiced after this decision from the Supreme Court. After all, many of them are taking their bets seriously. Many punters consult prediction sites like CricketPrediction365 to even make sure that their bets are strong. This is how much they take sports betting seriously.
As of September 1 of this year, the 13 States that now allow sports betting in their borders are Delaware, New Jersey, Mississippi, West Virginia, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Road Island, Arkansas, New York, Iowa, Indiana.
Delaware was the first State to allow sport betting in their borders after the Supreme Court’s decision. This was immediately followed by New Jersey. The most recent state that launched sports betting in their borders is Indiana. That happened on September 1, 2019.
Colorado is next on the line when it comes to deciding on this. They are scheduled to do so on November 2019 by a public vote.
Aside from the states mentioned, there are still a number of them that are now considering passing laws to make sports betting legal within their borders. Some of these states are California, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kentucky, Michigan, South Carolina, Maryland, Connecticut, and Louisiana.
While 13 states have already allowed sports betting in their borders, not all of them already allow online sports gambling within their areas. Online sports betting is only legal in the states of Nevada, New Jersey, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
It was in August 2018 when New Jersey allowed sports betting within their borders. The first online bookies in this state are DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook. As of now, New Jersey has a total of 13 sports betting apps out there.
Meanwhile, it was just in May of this year when online sports betting has arrived in Pennsylvania. The first mobile apps that went live on the market are SugarHouse Sportsbook PA, BetRivers, Parx, and FanDuel Sportsbook PA.
It was also this year when Iowa allowed sports betting sites and apps operate locally. The first online and land-based sportsbooks in this state went live in August 2019. Nevada did not have to change much after the Supreme Court decision. This state has always allowed wagering on sports online.
In West Virginia, FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook were also launched in this state. They made sure it happened right before the start of the 2019 NFL season.
There are already a few more states that are considering to legalize online sports betting within their borders. Some of the states that are looking to pass laws about this are Rhode Island, Mississippi, Indiana, Illinois, Oregon, and Tennessee.
Rhode Island will most likely launch its first online sports betting app by fall of this year. In Mississippi, mobile wagering is only allowed on casino property.
Illinois passed a law about online betting this year. Bettors will first have to sign up for accounts at casinos, racetracks off-track betting facilities in person before they can remotely place their bets. Even if the law is passed this year, this will most likely be effective in 2020.
When it comes to daily fantasy sports, it is believed to be legal in at least 40 states. This is according to the companies and operators that promote this game. Daily fantasy sports are illegal in the states of Iowa, Montana, Louisiana, Arizona, and Washington. Nevada only allows licensed daily fantasy sports sites to operate within the states.
The truth is that the legality of daily fantasy sports still in the grey area. There are no specific federal laws that concern this type of betting yet.
Now, even if only few states allow the local operation of online sports betting, this doesn’t mean that locals of states where online sports betting still illegal cant wager on sports. They can still place their bets on online bookies base outside their states. There is no law that states how doing so is illegal.
