Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Where I Belong”?

“Where I Belong” was my debut as a producer and artist. I’ve kept my transition into music very low key, and quite a lot of people were very surprised by it. But I feel as if I belong here as well! I experienced so many firsts with this song, so whatever happens it will always be very special to me.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?


The song came to me as a draft from a songwriting camp, and was reworked in collaboration with my producer friends TRXD and – once they were onboard – Nico & Vinz. We all connected with the lyrics on different levels. For myself I am making choices and changes. Finding my place in the world.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

This was not the first music video I’ve done, but by far the coolest! And for my own song!
The locations – various places in Denmark, but mostly on a beach on the North Sea – were terrific, as were the crew. I played dying or dead most of the time, which was surprisingly fun.

What was it like to work with Nico and Vinz, and how did that relationship develop?

They are both amazing people! We’ve met playing charity games of football and hockey, so I knew them a little beforehand. But after spending time together in the studio and for the video shoot in Denmark I feel like I can call them good friends.

How much did they get to influence the song?

I wanted them to feel the track and bring their spirit to the song, and they tweaked the lyrics a little to fit in even better with how they felt. So they contributed to the vibe as well as with their vocals.

What role does Norway play in your music?

A huge part! I’m inspired by, and purposely work with, a lot of talented Norwegian songwriters, producers and artists. And I’ve been overwhelmed with the support from Norwegian fans and friends. Love it!

How does your upbringing influence your writing?


Great question. Even though my focus is on the production side, more so than the writing, I feel that I have a huge advantage in that my parents raised me to have an open mind.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes, I’m ready to release the next track. It’s done, and I’m flexing my acting muscles again for the music video.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Soon. Very soon!

Any plans to hit the road?

That’s the idea and the dream! Let’s focus on the music and production, and then see what the future brings.

What else is happening next in HAYES world?

It’s all about the music. And getting through winter.  It gets cold here in Norway!
