Newly formed heavy rock outfit Never Better slow things down with the release of their new single “Light It Up.” Spacious and melodic verses serve as a contemplative reprieve between arena-ready chant choruses in the song, which itself often offers a breath-catching moment in the bands heavy, cathartic live performances.
Bassist/Vocalist DJ Edwards notes “[Light It Up] quickly became a favorite during our live performances, people always grab their friends and slow dance.” Which is a stark contrast between the mosh inducing vibes seen in the bands heavier numbers.
Backed by a sonic landscape reminiscent of cult favorites like New Order and The Cure, Edwards assumes the voice of an old whiskey drinker, rolling his eyes at the naive and pretentious conversations of liberal arts students who plague dive bars with philosophical conversations… some of us are trying to drink here. But rather than stop there, the narrator challenges the students’ nihilistic ideology with a sarcastic tone that culminates in the song’s chorus and calls to action:
“Light it up, light it up, like theres nobody there
Live it up, live it up, like nobody would care
No one does, no one does, it’s so simple and sweet
So light it up, light it up, ‘til you’re feeling the heat”
