On the heels of the 25th anniversary of Portishead’s classic Dummy, the Mynabirds will release a cover of “Glory Box” on September 20th. “Dummy was my all-time favorite make-out record in high school and is in my permanent top ten, period,” singer Laura Burhenn says. “That Beth Gibbons slid that feminist anthem into my teenage brain — that song completely rewired me.” In an era when women’s rights are being edged backwards, the refrain “I just want to be a woman” never felt so poignant.
“Glory Box” was produced by Patrick Damphier; It will be released on all digital and streaming platforms via Our Secret Handshake, the womxn-driven, womxn-focused creative strategy collective Burhenn co-founded in 2018. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Omaha Girls Rock, the org Burhenn helped found, has taught at, and fully supports in their mission to empower girls through music.
