INTERVIEW: NYC-based R&B/pop artist Day Kornegay

Hi Day, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

What it do Vents!! Thanks so much for having me. I’ve been great… it’s an amazing time for me right now!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Automatic”?

Yessir! Automatic is essentially about chasing fun and adventure. It’s a danceable tune that reflects how we all move now! We love to travel and enjoy life! And sometimes post it. 😉

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Just the events in life itself, my producer and I were just in a zone where we felt like let’s make a record about how we (this generation) make moves right now. Chasing our dreams and living our best lives. Some of the most popular things you see online and social media are travel, fun and romance. So we combined them!

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The filming process was incredible. It was definitely hard work and we shot this video, which I’m extremely proud of and dumb psyched about, in a very small window. But the creativity, dedication and commitment of all the people involved was nothing short of amazing! I’m blessed to have some of the greatest and most talented people on my team.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was actually incredible. We started out with a full day of recording live instruments like full band style. 4 horns, 2 keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, 2 percussionist and ultimately an additional bass player! The energy was crazy that day. It set the tone for the entire record. We did the vocal writing session(s) separately on a completely different day and caught the same magic by inviting a few writer friends to come vibe. Again setting the tone for the rest of the song. The process of creating this song, now the single, was one of my favorite experiences in crafting this EP.

What role does NYC play in your music?

New York is an international iconic destination! You can literally find people from virtually all over the globe, like every country is represented! For example little Italy, China town, little Africa in Harlem, and etc! The average New Yorker knows and is exposed to so much about the world. Being born and having grown up in this city is everything for me! NYC is literally a part of the fabric of who I am and it most definitely spills over into my music. I mean Madison Square Garden, Lincoln Center, BAM, and so much more were always in my backyard. Legendary music venues like The Bitter End, The Blue Note, The Sugar Bar, S.O.B’s, The Village Underground and Joe’s pub (to name a few) were my training camps! And NYC is literally where hip hop started so you know the streets, hallways and underground spots were my coaches and sparring partners. I am so NY!!

How your upbringing has influence your writing?

See the previous answer above! Lol! Also, add lots of love, kindness, amazing Parents, Grand Parents, siblings, friends, church fam and God. As with all of the aspects of my life, my upbringing was a key component in my writing. Most greats say write about what you know and your experiences. I agree, I try to share my true self in my music. I grew up in bed study Brooklyn, with churches on every corner and drug dealers and liquor stores too. I lived on a family oriented tree lined block with the projects like 3 blocks away. Imagine navigating the nuances of those dynamics. I was reared by two incredibly amazing parents, who divorced but ultimately on many levels were still in love with each other. There are so many things in my upbringing that lends itself to my writing, too many to touch on. But ultimately, I wouldn’t change a thing as this “upbringing” makes me who I am.

How’s your new EP coming along?

It’s finished and I’m hyped to share it with you guys and the world!! The EP is so eclectic. It’s fun moody, danceable, deep, bright, dark, rich, soulful… I could go on but I won’t. Stay tuned and listen when it drops!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The title is still in the works. The release date will be announced soon!! Please keep checking in on my site and social media pages! It’s gonna be lit so stay focused!!

How did you get to blend the pop with the hip hop and R&B on this record?

It came naturally, we live in a blended society and can access anything musically these days. Like most, I’m exposed to so many genres of music daily. These three are innate to me though, so it wasn’t even a thought. Just followed the feeling and it felt good!

Any plans to hit the road?

Yup! Definitely! Can’t say specifics at this moment but again follow the guy (me) on social media and keep checking the website. Info soon to come!

What else is happening next in Day Kornegay’s world?

So many things! Definitely some big moves and more hard work. Another single will be released soon, accompanied by a visual for sure. Again, I’m fortunate to have an amazing team so the wheels are always turning and we’re working tirelessly to bring this music and forthcoming projects to the people. But right now we’re focused on “Automatic.”We want to give it our fullest attention so we can share it with as many people as possible! So let’s let Automatic live its fullest life!!
