INTERVIEW: Kenny Ali

Hi Kenny, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thanks for having me! I’ve been Good… no complaints this way.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “God As My Witness“?

Of course. In this song I speak my goals into existence. And what better witness than God? Who happens to be omnipresent.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

No event in particular, but listening to the beat (produced by Mdxx) can be considered an event. That was it!

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

“I brought the idea to Prime Cut Film as a hypothetical concept. Not really thinking they would want to go in that direction, but they loved it. They emailed the video treatment over to me, which embodied the hook as well as each verse and I loved it. They sent me a well planned out itinerary, which consisted of a 2-9 hour per day schedule. After that, we secured everyone and everything that would be needed to bring the treatment into fruition. The video shoot its self went smooth. Once Prime Cut Film sent the final edit I was blown away, because they exceeded my original vision!

How was the recording and writing process?

Once I heard the beat, the words and cadence of the hook just came to me. The title of the song came from the hook. From there I just filled in the blanks with the verses. I like to memorize the song before I record. That way I can perform it in the booth while recording. It just comes out better to me that way…

What role does Youngstown play in your music?

Youngstown plays a huge role in my music. The city, the people, & my neighborhood environment is what molded me. From my experiences to what I saw growing up inspired my music in a positive way even though my surroundings weren’t always positive. I always got mad love and support in my city.

How has LL Cool J and Redman influenced your writing?

Awe Man! I first saw LL Cool J on a old flick called “Crush Groove.”  From the way he was dressed to the heart and soul he put into his performances was just electrifying. I thought to myself…I want to be like that dude. LL was the first of that kind of MC. From there I wanted to be a rapper. As far as Redman goes, his energy, wordplay & verbal delivery was impeccable. I studied how he manipulated words and how each line had a double meaning. His creativity was mind boggling to me. So of course he influenced my writing technique greatly.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Most definitely. I will be releasing another single, an album as well as a web series on my YouTube Channel & social media platforms. Stay tuned!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Yes, I have an album coming soon!

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes!

What else is happening next in Kenny Ali’s world?

Right now I’m prepping this album and next single for release and growing my fan base  in the process.
