Everything You Need to Know About Lizzo

While you may only have become aware of Lizzo this year thanks to the runaway success of singles such as ‘Juice’ and ‘Truth Hurts’, Lizzo has actually been on the scene for a number of years already. Here are 10 facts about Lizzo.

American Singer and Rapper

Best known for her singles from her 3rd studio album that have brought her major success this year, Lizzo is an American rapper and singer who often incorporates themes of independence, self-love, and self-confidence into her music.

Lizzo and her Flute

Besides her incredible vocal range and rapping abilities, Lizzo is also a classically trained flautist. Lizzo has been playing the flute since a young age and was even in the marching band during her years at the University of Houston while studying classical music.

Personal Details

Lizzo was born Melissa Viviane Jefferson on 27 April 1988 and her star sign is Taurus. Lizzo has been outspoken regarding the fact that, at the age of 21, following the death of her father she lived out of her car for a year while attempting to break into the music industry as she couldn’t afford an apartment, let alone a hotel room.

Lizzo’s Hometown

Before moving to Houston, Texas at the age of 10, Lizzo lived in Detroit, Michigan with her family. Lizzo attended Elsik High School in Houston and recently revealed in an interview that she used to phone into local radio stations and freestyle rap in order to win competitions. Lizzo’s Prince Collaboration

In 2014, Lizzo collaborated with Prince on his Plectrumelectrum album for the song ‘BoyTrouble’. Speaking of the experience, Lizzo described it as “surreal” and said it was like a “fairy tale”.

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Appearance

In 2018, Lizzo was a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race. As if this isn’t awesome enough, the bottom 2 queens were challenged with lip-syncing for their lives to Lizzo’s song ‘Good as Hell’.

‘Made in Chelsea’ Appareance

In 2014, Lizzo made an appearance on Made in Chelsea as a performer and while the cast spent time in New York City where Lizzo played herself, she treated the cast to her very own rendition of ‘Rapture’ by Blondie.

Third Studio Album

Before signing with Nice Life and Atlantic Records, Lizzo released two studio albums entitled Lizzobangers in 2013 and Big Grrrl Small World in 2015. In 2016, she released Coconut Oil, her first major-label EP and this year released her 3rd studio album entitled Cuz, I Love You.

Billboard R&B Chart Debut

The year 2019 has certainly been a lucky one for Lizzo and it just keeps getting better. In January 2019 she made her Billboard R&B Chart debut with her single ‘Juice´ and later that same month she performed ‘Juice’ on The Ellen Show.

Video Music Awards Debut

Most recently, on 26 August 2019, Lizzo performed at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) for the first time and sang a medley of songs made up of ‘Truth Hurts’ and ‘Good as Hell’. Her performance was widely praised by fans and fellow musicians alike.
