INTERVIEW: Synth-Pop Duo Moonray
Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Barb: Hello! Thank you so much for having us.
Jonray: We’re doing wonderful, another day floating on cosmic jelly.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Come Away”?
Jonray: “Come Away” is our latest syntropical pop song, a love song. It’s about going through tough times together and being there for each other. Guiding each other back home.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Barb: Not one event in particular, we knew from the start it’d be a love song. The lyrics fell into place shortly after Jonray proposed to me under a full moon. So in a way, that event inspired the completion.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Barb: We will be releasing a lyric video but no plans as of yet for a full music video.
How was the recording and writing process?
Jonray: Barb and I wrote the music for the song a year ago while attending the Balanced Breakfast music industry summit, in a San Francisco hotel room. While traveling we like to bring a small music set up to capture the midi data using soft synths. We then go back to our studio Moon Labs and burn the midi files into our analog synths and drum machines. As mentioned earlier, the writing process happened following our engagement so love was definitely in the air. This song will always be our wedding song. It was self recorded and produced by us and mixed by Eric “Mixerman” Sarafin. We had a ton of fun creating this one!
What role does Austin play in your music?
Jonray: Austin is a place that has helped us grow immensely as artists, we run Kingdom Sound our live sound company and a private recording studio. We’ve had the chance to meet, record and run sound for some great artists. It inspires us to keep at it! You don’t have to dig too deep to find a wonderful variety of musicians.
How does your personal and romantic bonds influence?
Barb: It’s the essence; it is what fuels our passion to keep creating and keep growing together and trying to be the best versions of ourselves on all planes of existence. “Love is all you need”… and a synth or two or three or ten. JK but seriously.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Barb: Ooooh yeah! We are excited. We’ve been working on material for 2.5 years.
Jonray: We have some singles coming out this year and some more with guest drummers, Joe Travers and Johnny Radelat.
Barb: We are also working on some new tunes inspired by our last trip to Santa Monica, CA. Very excited for this coming year!
Jonray: A lot cooking on the grill!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Jonray: Some time in the next month we’ll be releasing another single, “No Stranger to Love.” Stay tuned on our Instagram for release date and much more music coming in the next few months.
Any plans to hit the road?
Barb: No specific dates this year but we are planning a tour in 2020. No official details yet.
What else is happening next in Moonray’s world?
Jonray: Well, we start shooting our first official music video for an unreleased song working with Diego Lozano and we cannot wait to share it! We are also in the process of launching our online shop: shopmoonthreads.com. Rebranding our studio under Moon Lab Studios and continuing to better our musicianship and production skills. We want to make the best art for y’all!
