Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Young”?
Young is a song I wrote a couple of years ago, and it’s just been sitting on my laptop ever since. I had it lined up to release further down the line but it’s a September song and so I felt like it was time for you all to hear it. It’s the saddest song I’ve ever written but also perhaps the one I’m most proud of.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I had a feeling that I suppose of lot of us will get when it gets to September, when the summer feels like it is slipping away into Autumn. I always feel like another year has basically gone, and it’s a kind of nostalgic feeling. That’s what Young is alluding to.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Well currently I’m just self-releasing these tunes, so maybe when I can afford to, yes. I live in London now so I’m too skint to make a vid.
How was the recording and writing process?
There have been so many versions of this song, it started off sounding like a kind of folksy sounding piano ballad, which I suppose it is in a way. I got my amazing friend Dan Brew to play guitar on it, and messed around with a vocoder and added some whirly synths, and that’s when it really opened out into more of a soundscape thing.
What role does Manchester play in your music?
I’ve already said the world “nostalgia” but that’s what it boils down to. I actually grew up 20 miles from Manchester in the South Pennines, which is a beautiful landscape, and I feel like it informs everything I write.
The picture for the artwork is my great grandma and her pal Mary, and it was taken in like 1915. It’s up on the wall at home above the piano, and it felt as if they watched me write this song.
Does the new single mean we can expect an album? – how’s that coming along?
This whole project for me has been about releasing songs I made years ago, from a period of my life where perhaps I wasn’t in a great place. I have quite a lot of songs which I wrote around that time, so I’m polishing them up one by one and putting them out for the whole world to hear. So there could be an album in the future, yeah! But for now, expect more singles.
Any plans to hit the road?
I am a freelance musician, and that’s what I do for a a living, so I feel like I’m constantly travelling around playing for other people’s projects, but rarely my own. It would actually be cool to do some gigs with mine, but as yet I have none lined up.
What else is happening next in EMBLM’s world?
I’m going to put another single out in a few more months, I haven’t decided which song yet but maybe I’ll put something a bit more upbeat out to cheer you all up a bit after this one.
