INTERVIEW: Annie Sollange

Hi Annie, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Amazing – living that neon life =)

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “About You”?

Yes! Sure, it’s a combination of a heavy drop and a broken heart haha!

I wrote it with an attitude of going through hard times in a relationship. At that point I felt like a person was crashing me & my self-worth and it almost felt like it was holding me back from achieving my dreams because I had no life left in me.

I sang the hook first when I wrote it… “How I feel about you!!!!!! “ cause I felt terrible.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Omg I had so much fun – this was my first video shoot with a team of 13 people, serious production, 5 actors. Lara Aslanian (the director) – showed me a whole new world of what actually the process is like on a big screen. She is incredible, when she told me about the video idea – I told her I haven’t tried dating apps, but I heard a lot of funny stories so I was totally up for it!

How was the recording and writing process?

I recorded it in my apartment in LA, wrote it with Harley Bird! My regular writing collaborator! First thing I wrote was a hook with the “Oohs” and I asked Harley if that was too weird, but he loved it so we kept it! And now I feel like it’s my favorite part of the song because it’s different from other songs we hear on the radio! Maybe it’s the Russian in me ha.

What role does Moscow play in your music?

Well, I guess I’ll always have that in me, the way I hear things are different because of my culture and the way I was brought up. People are more tough in Russia, but I’m thankful for that and the way I was raised. It made me desire bigger things and be able to handle bigger obstacles I guess.

How did your musical perspective change as you moved to the states?

I definitely improved tremendously in my songwriting, I started hearing the rhythm better and found a better sound placement in my voice. I became a nerd recently, just obsessed with studying hit songs, melodies, and structures. But also, I feel like in LA I became more open minded in my songwriting and style of performance. It’s like I’m having fun with it now and I hear things differently.

How has Mariah Carey and Celine Dion influenced your writing?

They influenced my sound, my voice. I listened to their songs for hours and hours and just connected to it so much. It’s so real and so emotional. It drives me crazy.

My songwriting is influenced by Max Martin, I’m a huge fan.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Oh yes yes, I am recording two EPS. One solo and one collaboration with a producer!

And it will be way more POP. Think Kim Petras, she is my latest obsession!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

This Autumn.

Any plans to hit the road?

After the EP is done, yes!

What else is happening next in Annie Sollange’s world?

Neon gun emojis, raves, neon wigs.. Oh yes my merch just launched! With my signature neon artwork from “About You” single! I’m making the cutest pink hoodies as well as Champion T Shirts with my logo! Very proud of this line I launched. You should check it out =)
