INTERVIEW: Terouz

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Outstanding”?

‘’Outstanding ‘’ is my debut single as TEROUZ.

I used to manage and front a brassy quintet aka The Rising Few but now I feel that I am truly baring it all with this new sound and different aproach to songwriting.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Hitting 35!

It was clear I wasn’t going to stop songwriting but my intentions behind it switched to just wanting to groove and dance.

My father also passed away around that same time and I was single again for the first time in 6 years…I needed to chase after the simplicity of having genuine fun and not complicating things.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was complicated!

I went into different studios with different musicians many times over just to scrap it all and start over again. The band approach to recording was not pulling it off.

Guitarist and bassist Andre Galamba ended up recording both instruments from home I and filtered the whole thing note by note just to make sure I was getting the consistency in energy and groove I was looking for.

Enter Gabriel Ethier.

The ‘’electro-guru’’ producer blended drum machine with the chops of powerhouse drummer Harvey Bienaimée and designed the scope of the track while the great Glen Robinson gave it the final shine in mastering.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

I decided to put all of my trust into DOP /cinematographer Anthony Gharzouzi.

He has a great appreciation for cinematic frames and panoramic compositions stylized with exquisite coloring and meticulous lighting.

We had countless meetings and discussions about what we are trying to achieve…simply beautiful imagery that would complement the dancefloor banger!

I was inspired by the gloomy ‘’film-noir’’ esthetic and I somehow wanted to incorporate boxing scenes of figthers falling and getting up again.

Tarek called me up one day saying that he found the perfect boxing ring in in the now permanently closed, Michel Morin boxing gym in Joliette, Quebec.

Would you call this a departure from your previous musical work?

I feel I was still mainly paying tribute to my idols with my past work.

It is definitelymore me than anything else.

How your upbringing has influence your music?

Back in Cairo, when I was around 5, my mom used to strap me in the backseat while she drove around doing chores.
The same 6 song cassette tape would play over and over…Alan Parsons Project, America, Cat Stevens, Phil Collins and Demis Roussos (Aphrodite’s Child) were my earliest introduction to songwriting.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

The secons single ‘’Burn’’ should come out by the end of the year!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

There is a self-entitled 4 track EP and a cover coming up by April May 2020.

Any plans to hit the road?

I want to promote that EP by touring The Midle East, specifically Egypt , Jordan, Dubai and Lebanon.

What else is happening next in TEROUZ’s world?

My first live show is coming up on the 9th of October at 4:30pm at Complexe DesJardins, Montreal part of the Festival des Couleurs.

It’s a 60 min set of new material!

Boom!
