INTERVIEW: John Robb

Hi John, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been great, thanks for asking! I’ve been hard at work this summer building my business and spending time with friends and family.

How were you drawn into the business of social media?

Building audiences on different platforms has been a passion of mine since I was in middle school. Since then I have garnered hundreds of millions of impressions across my profiles. I’ve always been intrigued by how the internet grants anyone the potential to deliver content to millions of people, regardless of your location, age, or income. I love the challenge of figuring out how to put a message in front of an audience, capturing their attention, and from there inspiring them to take action—whether it’s to purchase a product, follow an account, or share the message. My early experiences enabled me to discover and develop my passion for social media and marketing.

Prior to this, what other goals would you say you had in life?

I’ve always enjoyed building software, so building a platform like InfluencerHive seemed like an obvious thing to do after my experience in influencer marketing. My primary goal for my career has always been to create products and services that people enjoy, while my personal goal is to surround myself with people I care about.

There’s a savviness behind the whole meme thing – did you chop your skills throughout the years or you had this kind of natural talent?

After making thousands of posts on social media, you develop an eye for content that people will engage with. Being able to curate, create, and distribute content effectively is a skillset that I’ve developed over the past few years.

How did you come with the idea for marketplace for influencers? 

I wanted to build a marketplace for anyone to purchase promotions from social media influencers after witnessing first-hand the amount of friction there was in accessing influencer marketing. Buying promotions from influencers has always been a messy task, requiring far more time and energy than it should. Firstly, you have to discover an influencer that has a genre and audience that is a fit for the content you want posted. Next, you have to figure out how to get in touch with the influencer through DM (a shot in the dark), email, or Kik. This would often take days to get a reply, if at all. Additionally, there is little consistency in pricing and it can be difficult to determine if you are getting a good deal. Lastly, there is no effective way to measure results and see what you paid for. InfluencerHive has streamlined this process, allowing you to sort through pages by genre, view pricing on the spot, pay, upload your content, and see the results from the post.
