INTERVIEW: Jeff McMullen

Hi Jeff, welcome to VENTS Magazine!

THANK YOU!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write the single “Shyne On”?

SHYNE ON WAS WRITTEN ABOUT MY MEDICAL CONDITION, HOW MUSIC CAN BE MY BEST MEDICINE. MUSIC IS THE ULTIMATE HEALER, IT IS UNIVERSAL. I WANTED SOMETHING UPBEAT AS A MOOD LIFTER AND SHYNE ON JUST CAME TO ME. SO, THE INSPIRATION CAME FROM A DESIRE TO SPREAD THE HEALING.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

NO PLANS AS OF YET FOR A VIDEO, BUT NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION.

The single comes off your new album Pain Management – what’s the story behind the title?

PAIN MANAGEMENT IS ABOUT TREATING AN ILLNESS. I FEEL MUSIC IS THE BEST REMEDY. SO MY SONGS  ALWAYS TRY TO SEND A POSITIVE MESSAGE TO OTHERS. THE BEST GIFT I COULD ASK FOR IS THAT SOMEONE HEARD ONE OF MY SONGS, AND WALKED AWAY FEELING BETTER.

How was the recording and writing process?

THE RECORDING AND WRITING PROCESS USUALLY BEGIN WITH A MELODY IN MY HEAD, I HAVE A HOME STUDIO WHERE I CAN WORK AWAY AT THE IDEAS, THEN I WRITE THE LYRICS USUALLY IN PROSE, AFTERWARD, I ORGANIZE THEM INTO SONGS, ONCE I’M REALLY HAPPY WITH THE MELODY. SOME SONGS TAKE YEARS TO FINISH, BUT MOST COME QUICKLY, I WRITE ALL THE TIME. LONG DRIVES IN MY TRUCK ALSO GIVE GREAT INSPIRATION, WHEN I HAVE TIME TO CONTEMPLATE LIFE AND THE STORIES THAT COME FROM IT.

What role does Texas play in your music?

TEXAS IS MY HOME, I AM A VERY PROUD TEXAN. I SUPPOSE IT’S THE CULTURE, THE PEOPLE, THE MUSICAL HISTORY, AND THE GREATNESS OF THE STATE ITSELF SET THE BAR HIGH FOR ME TO PRODUCE THE BEST MUSIC I CAN. I REPRESENT MY HOME, SO I TRY TO BE EVERYTHING I CAN BE.

Is the description of Joe Cocker meets Don Henley meets Bob Seger accurate?

WELL, EVERYONE’S OPINION ON THIS WILL MOST LIKELY DIFFER, I THINK IT’S FAIR THOUGH. ALL THOSE SINGERS HAVE A CONVICTION IN THEIR VOICES, WHICH I BELIEVES SETS THE BEST SINGERS APART FROM THE REST. I WOULD SUGGEST, LISTEN, AND JUDGE FOR YOURSELF.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

MY FAMILY ARE A BIG INSPIRATION. BUT, I HAVE EXTENDED FAMILY MEMBERS WHO ENCOURAGE ME AS WELL. HONEST ONES, TOO.

Any plans to hit the road?

NO PLANS AS OF YET TO TOUR, BUT IT’S NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION. I’VE TOURED BEFORE, BUT COULDN’T MAKE ENDS MEET. IF AND WHEN, A TOUR HAPPENS, I’LL MAKE SURE I DO IT CORRECTLY, AT THAT TIME.

What else is happening next in Jeff McMullen’s world?

I PLAY IN DALLAS/FT WORTH WITH A COVER BAND, FAZE, AND I’M SINGING AS MELLENCAMP IN A JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP TRIBUTE, AMERICAN FOOL. ALSO, I’M WORKING ON A NEW SOLO RECORD, TENTATIVELY TITLED, “THE SOUL NETWORK”, SO STAY TUNED….
