10 Famous Celebrities Who Used to Teach Kids

What do Gene Simmons, Sting, and Andy Griffith have in common? Believe it or not, these three celebs and entertainment icons all used to teach kids. You read that right. Kiss bassist Gene Simmons once taught little kids and probably took an early child care course or two! What other famous celebrities used to teach? Let’s find out!

Mr. T

Believe it or not, the famous professional wrestler and actor did a stint as a gym teacher at Chicago’s Paul Lawrence Dubar Vocational Career Academy. The Academy is a four-year vocational high school opened in 1942.

Stephen King

The king of horror and creepy once taught at the elite Hampden Academy in Main. While teaching at the Academy, King wrote numerous short stories. After the success of Carrie in 1974 he quit teaching. One can’t help wondering if your high school teacher was secretly the greatest horror novelist of all time?

Hugh Jackman

The X-Men superstar didn’t always shine on the silver screen. Jackman taught at the prestigious Uppingham school in England, a boarding school.  Jackman began as a gym teacher and continued to hone his physique well after leaving the phys-ed class.

Sheryl Crow

Before pursuing a solo career in 1986, the singer and entertainer Sheryl Crow taught music education at a St. Louis elementary school. She majored in music education in Columbia at the University of Missouri. Once her career took off, Crow left the teaching career behind. Can you imagine the superstar teaching kindergarten?

Andy Griffith

The Mayberry sheriff taught music and drama at the Goldsboro High School in North Carolina before becoming a household name on the Andy Griffith Show.

Jon Hamm

The Mad Men actor once taught drama at the John Burroughs School, his alma mater. He taught actress Ellie Kemper. The pair eventually co-starred in the Netflix hit Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. While at the John Burroughs School, Hamm also met fellow celebrity Paul Rudd.

Gabriel Byrne

The multi-talented and multi-faceted Irish star Gabriel Byrne taught Spanish and History at Ardscoil Eanna in Dublin, Ireland. Byrne left education after scoring it big on The Riordans and Bracken. The school closed its doors in 2016.

Brian May

Queen guitarist Brian May taught math at the Stockwell Manor School in Brixton, London. The musician did gigs between teaching. Eventually he found success with Queen and left Stockwell Manor.

Gene Simmons

Another music legend that taught children was the legendary Gene Simmons. He taught sixth grade in Harlem before Kiss gained fame. The bassist explained to The Ledger, “The reason I quit after six months is that I discovered the real reason I became a teacher. It was because I wanted to get up on stage and have people notice me. I had to quit because the stage was too small. Forty people wasn’t enough. I wanted 40,000.”


Sting, or Gordon Matthew Sumner, taught primary school in England. Before he gained musical fame, he coached soccer. Even after achieving musical success, Sting continues to push for raising teacher salaries and supports education.
