I’ve been doing great! I got a lot of travel and beach time this summer, so that was amazing. Thank you so much for having me!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Two Faced”?
Two-Faced is basically about the internal struggle you go through when casually dating two people at once. Feelings are developing and you’re not sure where each relationship is going. It can be overwhelming to say the least.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes! I was out with one of the two people this song is written about and I was having a blast but my mind kept shifting back to the other person. I had this weird contrast of emotions between butterflies and guilt which is super out of my character, so this song is all about where my mind was that night.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I’ve been grappling with a couple different songs on the EP, trying to decide which song I want to be the first video. This one is definitely on the table and I have a concept in mind, so we’ll see!
The single comes off your new album 20 Something – why naming the record after this song in particular?
I think the title of the song and EP really encompasses the theme of the project as a whole. There is this expectation of what your twenties are supposed to be like that glosses over the low points and stress that also come with this age. It’s that theme that not just the song but the entire EP conveys.
What’s the story behind the title?
The title was really just a nod to my age group and sums up everything I’ve experienced being this age. That’s what the EP is all about.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was amazing! This is the first EP that I wrote while it was being recorded. All the other projects I’ve been apart of the songs were written and picked months before I actually went to the studio to track them. Changing up the process was definitely an inspiring shift and helped me grow production wise.
What made you want to seek for a whole new direction this time around?
The change in sound really came from the change in songwriting. I went into this new project with an idea in mind that I wanted more heavy aspects of pop production, but once the songs were written the production really evolved with the themes of each of them.
What role does Queens play in your music?
Queens plays a huge role in my music since it ends up being where most of the things I write about take place! A track off the new EP called “Bayside” is titled and written after the neighborhood in Queens I grew up in. If you’re from there you’ll definitely pick out some landmarks in the lyrics!
What aspect of life did you get to explore on this record?
I think just writing from my own perspective vs. not really me in relation to someone else. The last EP I wrote and recorded was very much about the falling apart of a relationship and navigating that heartbreak. However, this new EP is more about exploring what happens to you on your own terms and having your own frame of reference, independent of being in a relationship.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
My friends were a huge inspiration in the creation of these songs. They’ve lived so many of these memories with me and I don’t know what I would do without them. I was also super inspired musically by a lot of indie pop songwriters and artists, specifically Jack Antonoff, he’s a big hero of mine.
Any plans to hit the road?
I have some shows in the works in the NYC area but no solid tour plans right now. I hope some day!
