STUNTDRIVER, the latest artistic statement from lauded Los Angeles-based underground creator, performance artist, musician and songwriter Kym Priess, has shared their striking new video for their debut single “Bad Bath,” (which was released digitally late last year). The video, written and directed by Priess and co-directed/shot by Arian Soheili for Modshift Productions, brings all of her mind-blowing visual talents to the forefront over a driving, barreling electro-industrial beat. “Bad Bath” features an ensemble of characters alongside Priess—bandmates John Avila and Anton Söder as well as special appearances by comedian Kristina Wong, theater artist Valerie McCann and actor/director Herb Newsome.
Says Priess: “‘Bad Bath’ was the fourth song I wrote under the name STUNTDRIVER. Although my intention was to venture into more-electroclash musical territory with the project, I was craving the return to an uptempo-punk-like anthem. Clearly with the song, I wanted to examine habits, patterns and behavior that no longer serve us, in a campy and visceral way. We all have our struggles. How we handle it is up to us. No matter one’s circumstances, we are indeed in the same ‘ol dirty bathtub together in this life.
With the video, I really wanted to take my loves for the abstract, the absurd, and the vivid to tell the story of the struggle within. I am a child of the late 70s – I watched MTV all day long and was a huge fan of videos with a narrative. Eh,em…. Motley Crüe, Ozzy, Madonna!”
Originally conceived as a “theatrical rock adventure” with a pair of wildly creative and immersive multi-media performances at Highways Performance Space/Gallery last year, STUNTDRIVER has honed itself into a sleeker vehicle for Priess’s outsized musical vision. Performing on the single are Priess (vocals, guitar, bass and synths), former Oingo Boingo member John Avila (bass, backing vocals), Anton Söder (drum programming, synths, guitars), Nightmare Air’s Jimmy Lucido (live drums) and Ryan Sullivan (guitars). The band are a post-rock phenomenon combining industrial, electro, punk and dance elements into their bombastic, yet connected, existential mix. The song was produced by Priess, Avila and Söder, and mastered by Mark Chalecki with additional bass tracking by Zach Summerill.
