INTERVIEW: Three Strands

Hi Sean, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

-Doing well, I’ve been gearing up for this new release and a busy fall of touring!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Further On Ahead”?

-This song is the second single from my forthcoming sophomore EP titled “Not the Only One”. It is definitely a new sonic direction for me. We used a lot of 80’s era instrumental inspiration to give it a lot of atmosphere and mood.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I’ve made it a point in recent years to explore more avenues and beliefs that connect people today. The quest I’ve undertaken has greatly impacted my writing, while allowing me to be more open and honest with myself. The song addresses how we often believe that happiness is just out of reach, but for me, ‘Further On Ahead’ is like a journal entry that details a very specific time in my life.”

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes! We filmed an acoustic version in a very cool old church. It will be released in tandem with the single and I think the aesthetic and visuals will hopefully give listeners an insiders’ perspective to where the roots of the song began to take form.

How was the recording and writing process?

This was one of those songs that just came out all at once. I had the initial guitar melodies in place and within five minutes all the lyrics were on the page. The recording process was very similar. When the engineer and I sat down with the scratch track we both just knew what layers to put overtop to flesh it out.

How has Amos Lee and Foy Vance influenced your writing?

Both of them never allow themselves to be tied down by any particular genre. Over the course of an album or set list they both drift between funk, R&B, folk and rock. I love their versatility as writers and how they can just put their whole heart into their singing.

How did you get to balance the dark elements with the much uplifting tone on this song?

That is a technique that many of my favorite artists have mastered. I love the ability to convey a strong and sometimes darker message overtop of a fun and energetic arrangement.

How your upbringing has influence your music?

I grew up listening to a lot of classic rock, soul and blues thanks to what my parents exposed me to. That had a huge influence on my writing style later. People like Van Morrison, Sam Cooke and Stevie Ray Vaughan all seeped into my musical DNA. More recently listening to a wider range of styles has helped me refine what my sound can be. Artists like Leon Bridges, Chance the Rapper and David Ramirez all heavily influence me as well.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes! a new 5 song ep called “Not the Only One” is following later this year. Further on Ahead is the second single to be released. The first, titled “Dogma” was released back in October of 2018.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

see above. Further on Ahead will be released on all major platforms on Friday, August 30th.

Any plans to hit the road?

Through September and October I plan on playing all throughout the Northeast (NY, PA, MD, VA, CT)

What else is happening next in Sean Cox’s world?

Touring heavily throughout the fall and winter as well as making plans to release the new EP later this year.
