Keeping up with our series of premieres, we are joining forces with DEYO for the release of their new single “Can’t Shake You,” a happy-go-lucky song that blends the best of 60s music a la Beach Boys to perfection, while adding some modern touches.
This is the third single off DEYO’s upcoming self-titled debut, coming October 11th and co-produced by Jeremy Black (Apollo Sunshine). The album also features enginerring from Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Leonard Cohen) and support from Fats Kaplin (Jack White, Beck). He recently shared a video for lead single, “digital,” which features cameos from his brother Nicholas Braun, star of the hit HBO series Succession.
About the song, DEYO comments “It’s a true story. I wrote the song about a forbidden love, and then I immediately forgot about it. I found the voice memo about a year later and changed the words around to reflect what had actually happened in the meantime. It’s probably the most vulnerable song that I have ever shared with anyone. Piano based Alt-pop song with some beautiful production twists and turns.”
This project began in total secrecy. The songs were never meant to make it past the confines of the voice memo application or the laptop hard drive. As the productions grew, so did the forbidden love that they were about. It was a sonic experiment in a one bedroom apartment in San Francisco, in which DEYO played most of the instruments. Co-producer Jeremy Black breathed a new life into the tracks by adding his signature electronic/organic drum sound, and pushing the boundaries of where these songs existed. After finishing the album, DEYO relocated to New York City. A young fan/virtuoso bass player heard that DEYO was on the East Coast playing in The Complete Last Waltz and sent him a message. In response DEYO sent over the private soundcloud link of this new album. Within a matter of days, Timmy Stabler arrived at his hotel room, bass in hand, having learned every single bass line on the entire album. Within weeks, the rest of the group had formed with Levi Pugh on keyboards and Kai Barshack on drums. The first single “digital” will be premiering on July 11th at the Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn with a special solo performance by DEYO.
DEYO has recently shared the stage with Kevin Morby, Nels Cline (Wilco), Vulfpeck, Hiss Golden Messenger, Hand Habits, Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats), Vetiver, Lola Kirke, Matthew E. White, Marco Benevento, and Sam Cohen.
