Situated in Volusia County in the US state of Florida, New Smyrna Beach lies on the Indian River, and can be found along the Fun Coast Region. In 1768, the area where the city currently lies was settled when Dr. Andrew Turnbull, a Scottish physician, founded the colony of “New Smyrna”. This was the single biggest attempt by a British Crown member at colonization as told by history. Turnbull located around 1,500 settlers from Majorca, Ibiza, Smyrna, Mani Peninsula, Crete and Sicily in New Smyrna to cultivate sugarcane, indigo, hemp and also to produce rum.
