Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey there! Doing great, Livin’ the dream.. Thanks!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Pretending“?
It’s a really personal song that came from a breaking point, mentally. We were in the middle of a Christmas party surrounded by friends and Joey and I started jammin’ on an acoustic guitar. The song just literally spilled out of me. I was in a moment that should of been really happy, but inside I was frantic. Maybe having my friends around helped coax out how I was truly feeling, what I was hiding for so long – “I’m tired of pretending I’m okay & It’s okay to not be okay sometimes.” Like I was admitting it and then reassuring myself. I don’t really know exactly where it came from .. it was just one of those magical, lightning in a bottle moments and I’m really glad that we were able to capture it. I hope it can help others who are struggling as well.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Just the pent up emotions and feelings of every day life. The feeling that I always had to be the strong one, I always had to be okay – for the sake of everyone else. It a heavy weight to carry… The song is an emotional release.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
It was a touchy subject, a very vulnerable side of myself that I was revealing not only in the song, but visually and I wanted it to be authentic & straight forward. It turned out to be one of the best shoots I’ve ever been on and I’m happy with how it turned out.
The single comes off your new EP NO RLY…I’M FINE – what’s the story behind the title?
The title is actually a text message I sent. It’s pretty tongue in cheek.. NO RLY…IM FINE. Obviously I was NOT fine, but it’s easier to brush it off then to confront the underlying issues. Society has made being mentally unwell a stigma, so to avoid being uncomfortable or embarrassed its often not discussed, and it needs to be.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was cathartic & therapeutic to finally speak my truth through my art. It wasn’t easy to go through what inspired these songs, but the actual recording and writing part was pretty natural & authentic. The music flowed out and kind of wrote itself.
What was it like to work with Michael Martenson and Jake Cemer? How did those relationships develop?
It was awesome! They’re super talented, easy to work with, rad dudes! We’re all from around the same area, and came up playing music around the same time – so it was a great experience to create with our peers.
What made you want to tackle on these dark themes?
Because I lived it, and I write about what I’ve been through. Hopefully it can help someone who is going through their own dark times as well.
How did you get to balance the dark tone with the uplifting messages?
It takes the dark to see the stars.
