SINGLE REVIEW: Treat You by IZELLAH

Izellah’s latest release Treat You is an opportunity for her to draw on her musical theatre background, having appeared in Matilda the Musical, The Sound of Music, The Music Man and The King and I to name just a few.

Though the new track is an impressive contemporary pop ballad it could just as easily be viewed as a theatrical showstopper too, with its universal themes of friendship and love, it’s alluring and gratifying melodies. Just like all great ballads, the song is big on emotional pull and is wonderfully succinct and evocative. With only a piano accompaniment, Izellah is the focus here, her vocal range allowing her to express the subtle and the more emphatic points of the melody with ease, dynamism and heartfelt power. Although the lyric is undoubtedly the centrepiece, the melodic sequences are a perfect fit, never diminishing or overshadowing the words. It’s a mark of great songwriting. Izellah has no doubt developed her skills after having teamed up with several hotshot US producers and writers (Maroon 5, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Lopez, Eminem, Celine Dion and Kylie Minogue are just some of the names these guys have been affiliated with), skills which are quite clearly on show on this latest track.

The co-writer of Treat You, Tucker Murray Caploe, a rising star of American songwriting, has said about his experience working with Izellah, ‘I found it to be pretty remarkable that a 12-year old could rise above such negativity from her peer and see the creation of a new song as an opportunity to come at the situation with her friend from a higher perspective’. High praise indeed and praise that the final product reflects.

This song will no doubt bridge the gap between the more upbeat pop releases of Izellah’s career thus far and her future output, proving without a doubt that she is a serious contender on the global music scene.
