There is no doubt that Quentin Tarantino is one of the best cinematic storytellers in Hollywood’s history. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is a 2019 comedy-drama produced by Columbia Pictures, Heyday Films, and Bona Film Group. The main stars in this movie are Leonardo Di Caprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Dakota Fanning, and Al Pacino. It was produced internationally thanks to the mutual efforts of the United States and the United Kingdom. You will see multiple storylines in this movie, showing some of the last moments of Hollywood’s golden era in Los Angeles. Interestingly, this movie is the first time Quentin Tarantino didn’t work with producer Harvey Weinstein. Sexual abuse allegations against this producer were probably the main reason behind this. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the second part of May 2019. When it comes to theatres, the first showing was on the USA soil in late July, while the UK audience was able to see it on 14th August. The movie starts with a former TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo Di Caprio) and his friend is having a hard time to start their careers in Hollywood in 1969. Dalton was one of the stars of a TV show aired in the 1950s but his career started to decline later on due to very unpredictable times for show business. Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) is a friend and driver of Rick Dalton, a war veteran appearing in the first part of the movie with his pitbull named Brandy. He is driving his friend through LA. Quentin Tarantino is starting the movie showing Dalton’s neighbors, famous director Roman Polanski and his wife (Sharon Tate) who are being successful in the movie industry at that time. It was funny to see Dalton’s first attempt to become friends with Polanski and his wife. Tarantino is exploring all these characters, peaks and downfalls of their careers in Hollywood. It basically represents the classic age of television and good movies. Eventually, Leonardo Ci Caprio is getting the role of a bad guy in the new TV series called Lancer. Since he had a lot of troubles with alcohol, Dalton has made a couple of big mistakes with dialogues, and later on, suffered an emotional breakdown. Still, he returned to the shooting and delivered one hell of a performance to leave the director Sam Wanamaker speechless. Later on, Dalton had a very noticeable guest role in the episode of The F.B.I, so a popular agent Marvin Schwarz offered him a role in Spaghetti Western filmed in Italy. He eventually filmed four movies and gets married abroad.
Return to the LA, later on, was very emotional. Dalton informs Booth that he is not doing great financially, being unable to pay him as a driver, so these two characters go different ways at this point. Don’t bother to notice or understand the historical accuracy of this movie, as this film is far beyond that. We see it as a tribute to the old Hollywood, with a lot of scenes having zero impact on the narrative overall. The way they presented Los Angeles in the ’60s is just amazing and very enjoyable to see. The camera is trying to capture all the action and every single detail of our characters, especially their emotions.
The movie grossed close to $106 million in North America, close to $9 million worldwide. It was previously reported that the movie was the biggest pre-seller of any Quentin Tarantino’s work. Overall ratings online are doing good so far – getting 8 out of 10 on the majority of big movie review websites. A big number of online bookmakers have already opened the odds for 2020 Oscar awards, with Leonardo Di Caprio being a massive favorite to win it.
