INTERVIEW: KEL

Hi Kel, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Not bad! I’ve been dumb busy for the past few months but I guess that’s better than doing nothing haha.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “I Hope You Know”?

Yeah so this year has been pretty tough for me all around. Not just relationship wise but there’s just been many overwhelming events take place. I wanted to have one track to portray all of that emotion and it ended up being pretty epic. I really tried to capture everything that I was feeling in the production.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Not as much one in particular, a lot was going on at the time I wrote the song. However, there was one event that finally set the final spark that pushed me into writing the song. I would talk about the event but its still pretty raw and personal.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I’ve had a few thoughts for a video but nothing is set in stone.

How was the recording and writing process?

With being all self written, produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered, it can get to be a lot and at some times overwhelming but with this song it all came pretty quick. Joe saan absolutely killed his feature and was very helpful coming into the final edits. He has a wonderful ear for this thing. I think I spent more time on the final mixes and the mastering than I did on the actual production haha.

What role does Kansas City, MO play in your music?

There is so much talent all around Kansas City but so many people have yet to be heard. I feel very blessed to have influences around like Bam Kieth, Nave Monjo, Nino Lee, and so many other creatives that are all Kansas City Natives.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I have no current plans for an album but things can changes, inspirations can arise, so who knows? I will have consistent singles dropping every month.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not currently.

What new sounds would be tackling down and exploring moving on?

I really would like to start exploring westside Chicago style hip hop such as Saba, Smino, some of Chance’s stuff, and the like. I also want to start incorporating more musicality into my production.

Any plans to hit the road?

Not currently, but that is definitely something I will be working on come next year/year and a half

What else is happening next in KEL’s world?

In September, I’ll be heading to school at the conservatory of recording arts and sciences to study audio engineering. I have plans to move to Chicago in the latter part of next year but the winds could change, for not I just feel blessed to be where I’m at and where I’m going.
