Hi guys, thanks for having me. I’ve been great, working on writing a lot of new material at the moment which I’m excited about.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Stronger”?
Originally ‘Stronger’ was written just to open up my live shows, but soon after writing it I realised the response to it was actually really positive. It’s gone from being a back catalogue song to one of my favourites, but I initially didn’t plan on it being a single at all.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It’s written about walking away from something that you’re not invested in. It’s a bit savage really but sometimes you have to be selfish and look after yourself, even if it means hurting people in the process. The verses focus more on the delicate side of a situation like that, but the chorus I just wanted to let rip.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I would love to do a video! The song sounds really great stipped back so I’d love to mix it up a bit and release an acoustic video of it.
How was the recording and writing process?
Possibly the most relaxed process ever! I was sent the backing track by my producer, Joe, and came back with a topline a few days later. We later recorded the vocals together with the plan to re-record them properly later on but we ended up liking the takes so much we decided to keep them. The song sort of accidentally fell together, all of a sudden I was like “Oh, its finished?”
What was it like to work with Joe Cooper and Jack Gourlay? How did those relationships develop?
I write most of my songs with Joe, we work together so well and he’s an incredible writer/producer. We haven’t worked with Jack before but it felt like we’d known him for years in the session. It felt like he just really believed in the song and was as behind it as we were.
How much did they get to influence the song?
Joe played such a big part in creating the song, we always bounce ideas off each other. He somehow hears things I want in songs before I even know I want them. Jack brought in some amazing touches at the end as well that I just feel really complete the song.
How has Sigrid and Muna influenced your writing?
Sigrid definitely taught me to be savage. The way she can show attitude in songs is unreal, I wanted to have her confidence! MUNA’s lyric writing is incredible, they’re so unapologetic but very vulnerable and it’s something I definitely wanted to show in Stronger.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
You can! I’m currently in the process of mixing my next single which is really exciting. I wrote this one with Joe Cooper as well so you can expect a similar vibe to ‘Stronger’.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
No definite dates yet, but I want the singles to each have a colour theme that matches the feel of each song. So with that in mind I can tell you is that the theme for the next single is purple!
Any plans to hit the road?
I plan on playing a few more gigs in and around London before the end of the year, so keep an eye out for any dates on my Instagram @bryonymusicuk.
What else is happening next in Bryony’s world?
I’ll be spending a few long hours writing and recording in bedrooms. I’m so excited to perfect these songs and play them live!
