INTERVIEW: Steven Malcolm

Hi Steven, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been great! Living and learning as I go ya dig.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Summertime”?

Summertime is my newest single I’ve released, featuring the homie Jayway! I wanted to make a feel good vibe that gave not only a farewell but also an anthem to how my summer has been.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Actually it was all the trips to LA that inspired the record. LA is probably my favorite city outside of Grand Rapids back home that I love! Been out there writing music, networking, and just enjoying life a lot recently and it reflects in the record.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Filming the video was a movie! I got to fly out my closest friends and wifey for the shoot. This video was special!

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording and writing process was pretty fast. Once I got the production, I already knew what to do with it. I already knew I wanted to put a smooth approach to it and really tell a story and tell about my journey throughout this summer.

What role does Michigan play in your music?

Michigan is the backbone of my music. Michigan is what shaped me, molded me and brought me up to be the person I am today. Shout out to Grand Rapids. Gods glove 🧤

How your upbringing has influence your writing?

My upbringing is all I want to talk about nowadays. My story, my journey, my life, my music. Much more to come. I’ve only tapped in to the surface.

Do you tend to take a different approach when collaborating with someone else rather than on your own?

I find myself writing much faster when it’s for somebody else. Maybe because I’m more relaxed and less critical.

How did you get to balance all your different influences on your new album ‘The Second City’?

The balance came from the flow of the story honestly. My sound and style is so diverse that it just flows. We got a good balance on the wave.

What aspect of your own life did you get to explore on this record?

The effect of my fatherlessness. I never had to deal with it before writing this record. I came to terms with it, but never had closure. With this record it really brought closure to my fatherlessness.

Was this always meant to be a tribute album or did it rather evolve into this?

Definitely evolved into a dedication. With each part came growth in my life and different seasons, and by the end, the closure became the dedication.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

They all came from life, and life experiences that I’ve either seen or been through.

Any plans to hit the road?

Man we been on the road all summer. The Tag Team tour has been going crazy, a whole lot of rage. Also going back on tour this fall with a couple heavy hitters. Details coming soon.

What else is happening next in Steven Malcolm’s world?

A whole different shift is about to happen. These last two years of my career I’ve been led. It’s time for Steven Malcolm to lead 100% and for my creativity to actually be shown to the world. It’s time to go up. Let’s get it.
