INTERVIEW: Romel

Hi Romel, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you for having me, still can’t believe it. I’ve been good; I’m always good and would try my best keep being good lol

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Summer Time”?

I’m excited it’s finally out this Friday because I was a bit skeptical about releasing it now since its late summer but I made a late decision about what song should come first. But I think it’s worth the risk, because it’s a good song.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yeaah, since I was working in the studio a lot this period when  I realized I wouldn’t be able to make any holiday plans, so I decided to sing about what I would have loved to do this summer if I had a chance. And of course I had to explore my imagination plus pick up ideas here and there so it’s not just about me lol.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Still not sure since I never planned on releasing it this year but it’s out this Friday, let’s just see how it goes.

How was the recording and writing process?

There wasn’t much writing to be honest, I just finished recording a song with Slic and I just started singing about Summer and he just started playing the piano and then when I started freestyling he began putting everything together. Then at the end we just made a few adjustments to the song, so we made the song in just over an hour, that’s how we work.

What was it like to work with Slic Vic and how did that relationship develop?

Working with Slic is like working alone with an extra head lol. He just gets me. Sometimes before I finish telling him what I want he just says “I know what you mean” or sometimes he just plays something and I love it as soon as I hear it. We have a really good chemistry and I used to think it was because of blood lol but I think it’s more than being cousins; He’s Just an audio scientist. We’ve known each other since we were kids from when he made a remix of the Super Mario soundtrack while I freestyled to it to making really good songs together now

How much did he get to influence the song?

I would say he brought the song to life, that’s what he always does.

What role does London play in your music?

London is my home so the culture influences everything I do before I release a song I always imagine where I think it could be played in London since it’s a very diverse city.

How has Khalid and Pharrell Williams influenced your writing?

Pharrell is amazing, I’ve been compared to him a lot in the past but I’ve always watched how brave he is when he makes music like bringing a style that is completely different from what’s on the charts and watch it take over and I don’t even want to talk about his consistency because I’ll just keep going on. As for Khalid he’s a really good singer and but I’ve just heard a few people compare me to him because of my last single but I feel blessed to be compared to him because he’s really big at the moment.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes! I have about two more songs to release before the end of the year, all different genres but still different like Romel lol and a possible feature or two.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Possibly October or late September then another before the end of the year.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes, we are still talking to a few promoters and festivals for the end of the year and next year but we should start touring from end of the year or latest early next year.

What else is happening next in Romel’s world?

Lol don’t know for now as I have been really busy this year with music that I haven’t really done much with my acting career. Don’t get me wrong I’ve been on set a lot this year but it’s mostly for small roles as I haven’t had time to accept anything lengthy, but would get back to that soon.
