Today, we are pleased to join forces with the incredible Joshua Moriarty for the first listen at his new material Romantica.
His follow up album to the 2017 debut War Is Over, Romantica is an arousal for the senses, a (mostly) instrumental record comprised of piano, percussion, violins, saxophone, and other classic instruments. The deeply moving and lush arrangements take you on a musical voyage through Hawaii in the 50’s, Italy in the 60’s, Paris in the 70’s, an imaginary soundtrack to a movie from a glamorous and whimsical past. Romantica is Inspired by such compositional luminaries as Henry Mancini, AIR, Ennio Morricone & Les Baxter.
Moriarty says of the album, “I got tired of singing and writing lyrics, there can be so much ego and pressure when writing songs that way, needing to always try and say something profound or to make people pay attention to you and your words and your problems, it felt trite so I decided to write an instrumental album (apart from 1 of the 9 songs which I sing) and let the melodies and chords create the emotional template. It was a very liberating experience making a record this way, removing constraints I didn’t even realise I had placed on myself with my songwriting, thinking what instrument would best suit a melody as opposed to always using my voice.”
