I’m feeling good, lot’s of emotions releasing new music, scared for sure, but mostly very excited when I don’t get too caught up in my mind.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Lay Low”?
You know that feeling when you’re somewhere thinking to yourself, “why am I here?” Like in a shallow or one sided conversation at a party you don’t want to be at? Some relationships don’t leave ya with good feelings, some just end up leaving you feeling sad and rung out over and over again. Bad sign. “Lay Low” is about recognizing unhealthy relationships and taking a step back. Time is a precious thing and it’s so easy to waste it away and end up really unhappy when we’re not careful who we spend that time on. “Lay Low” is about trusting your instincts, your gut is usually right, follow it. Be where your heart feels good.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It was the build up of a few bad interactions all coming to a head and that day writing this I was feeling it pretty damn heavy.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yep, working on some ideas. Stay tuned.
How was the recording and writing process?
The chorus popped out when I was in the shower, feeling anxious about some relationships in my life and all those feelings came pouring out, the verses started coming together walking around my living room and got finished up along with the bridge with Scott Chesak when we recorded the final vocals and worked out more ideas for the production. He and JT Daly collaborated on all the final production. They both did amazing work on this. I’m so happy with how it all came together.
What role does Las Vegas play in your music?
I’ve always loved electronic music, grew up with a lot of 90’s techno and industrial rock around me. The Killers and Imagine Dragons were Vegas bands coming up when I was younger, I liked that their music fused different genres. That was inspiring to me. Electronic music is a big part of the culture here, I’m definitely a fan, and my music has certainly absorbed influence from that.
How has Portishead and Garbage influenced your writing?
I love that neither have ever felt like they were falling into any category. They’re just doing their thing.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
There is! I have an EP with more songs coming out very soon. Working away on lots of new music to come.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Any plans to hit the road?
I have some tour dates planned for fall. I’ll get dates posted up on my website soon. Can’t wait to get back out and see some familiar faces!
What else is happening next in Amy Guess’ world?
Got some videos in the cooker that will be coming for ya soon. Excited to bring this big old party to the live shows!
