There’s a lot to be grateful for! I’m wonderful, thank you.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Can’t Wait”?
It’s a strong percussive dance tune celebrating the chemistry of being with someone you love and anticipating the moment you get to express yourself physically with them. That’s the family friendly description.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes and I’m still sore. Kidding. I wanted to have some fun and challenge song structure norms by leaning into my quirks as a vocalist. I wanted to write about celebrating sexual chemistry with the foundation of a real connection, and most importantly, I wanted everyone to DANCE!!
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
We shot the film in one day, thanks to the brilliance of our director, Zane. We got shut down temporarily because of our smoke machine, but we were able to make the time up (barely) and finish strong. I decided to challenge myself with the dancing, and I’m more than grateful to my sweet and incredibly gifted choreographer Liezel Marie, and my beyond talented dancers for helping me every step of the way. I LOVE the art of Dancing, but I’m 6 foot 4, 240 pounds and I wear a size 16 shoe—so when I move, everything and everyone around shakes, haha—But I couldn’t do a video for this song and not dance!
How was the recording and writing process?
The idea for the hook came to me while I was listening to Justin Timberlake’s “Oh No What You Got”, but I wanted to do something out of the box so I wrote and arranged the song pretty quickly as an a cappella tune with vocal percussion etc. Every colleague and producer I played it for enjoyed it, but didn’t know what to do with it. Enter my producer, Colin Boyd, (Frank Ocean, Tyler the Creator, Mac Miller) who heard the song the first time and said, “I can work with this”.
This was my first time working with Colin, and I couldn’t have chosen a better man. Our goal was to honor the original a cappella song I wrote and marry it with the radio play of today’s hits. I was blown away by Colin’s ideas for production and vocal parts and etc. He’s truly a talent and one of our industry’s finest. We went through a lot of ideas and versions of this song to get to the finished product, but it was SO well worth it.
How has the likes of Beyonce and Michael Buble influenced your writing?
I’ve run away from the title of the “male Beyonce” for years, ha! But she’s definitely a vocal influence of mine, and I love that she writes music for her vocal style, and I feel she’s one of the true versatile vocalists in the game today. Same for Michael Buble, he can handle a dance tune, ballad, a jazz standard or a Charlie Puth song. I think the lesson is to be true to yourself. Lean into your strengths, and that was my approach for “Can’t Wait”.
What role does NYC play in your music?
NYC is known for it’s influence in multiple genres of music and theatre. Similarly, I consider myself a musical sponge. When you listen to my music, you hear R&B, Pop, the 11 o’clock Gospel showstopper, and even Jazz. I also love musical theatre and I’ve been blessed to do a great amount of regional productions. We’re working to bring my live show to NYC very soon. I’m so excited! I hope you guys come hang with me if I come to NYC.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Coming along well! I’m taking my next project one single at a time. I’m in no rush. I want to learn as much as I can and enjoy the journey. My next single is currently in pre-production and I’ll be back to tell you all about it as soon as it’s done.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
No dates just yet, and my lips are sealed about the title, not because I don’t trust you, but just in case it changes. Patience my loves, I promise I’ll let you know as soon as I can.
Any plans to hit the road?
My goal is to continue to gain momentum with this single and my other online content and be an opening act on a major tour within the next year and a half.
What else is happening next in Loren Smith’s world?
I’m releasing a lot of live performance videos with my band on my @sanglorensmith YouTube channel. Everything is recorded live and in one take. We’ve released my arrangement of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from the Lion King, and coming soon is a live version of “Can’t Wait” and a Beyonce’/Justin Timberlake Mashup. I’m currently enjoying one of the best jobs ever as the vocal captain and backing vocalist on the Michael Buble’ World Tour in addition to my work in Los Angeles as a singer, arranger and vocal contractor for film and television. I LOVE what I do! Whoever said you never work a day in your life when you love what you do lied. It’s still work, it’s just a little easier to get up in the morning to do it when you love it. Thank you for having me, please stay in touch! @sanglorensmith on IG, YT, Twitter, Snapchat, Soundcloud and FB.
