Hey there, I’ve been better. I’m on my third hour watching the TLC show 90 Day Fiancé. Right now I’m seeing a couple tear into each other about how to properly prepare a steak.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Witches”?
Yea, it was tricky to get it sounding right. It started out with a pretty straightforward kind of sixties arrangement and then slowly became the monstrosity it remains today.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Actually yea, it was inspired by that whole Elliot Rodger thing. He was this 18 year old spoiled southern California kid/incel who eventually became a deadly mass shooter and suicide…really bleak stuff, and completely nuts. What an asshole. I was pretty disturbed by that, and sing about it in the song.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Not at the moment.
How was the recording and writing process?
Lonely for the most part. I wrote and recorded Sacred World and Witches a while ago, and did most of the playing myself…I had to figure out how to work in a studio. I had no idea what the fuck I was doing. Fortunately I had my pal Kevin Smith (house engineer at Jackson Browne’s GrooveMasters Studio in LA) to help me clean up the mess when mixing.
What did you learn from your time in Moscow?
Mostly I learned how to speak Russian better. I also learned to use VPNs.
How did your musical perspective change as you move back to NYC?
Hasn’t changed much…lately lots of ESG! Some Gram Parsons and Waylon Jennings. Mulatu Astatke. A sprinkle of Sheryl Crow. A little Jimmy Buffett never hurt either.
How has Frank Zappa and Unknown Mortal Orchestra influenced your writing?
Frank Zappa has taught me exactly what not to do when writing music…one should aspire to be less like him.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yea, for sure…lots of songs in the works, and a couple more getting released soon. After this episode of TLC winds down I’ll try to write a song about it called ”One Must Slice their Steak on a Bias.”
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Two new songs called “The Waitress” and “Here Comes the Speed Now” are coming in the next couple weeks…the first is about a visit to a fundamentalist Christian diner in the middle of America, the second is about snorting adderall.
Any plans to hit the road?
At the moment, no. But hopefully some gigs in New York.
What else is happening next in Bob Piano’s world?
I’m thinking about switching phone carriers…right now I’m on MetroPCS’s $50 unlimited plan, but am tempted by Verizon’s $300 trade in rebate, which would land me a nice new cell phone. I just don’t want to be stuck on one of those cursed 24 month contracts.
