“Brick by Brick,” the new single from much-buzzed singer/songwriter Rebecca Binnendyk

“Brick by Brick,” the new single from much-buzzed singer/songwriter Rebecca Binnendyk, has been causing quite a stir among discriminating pop fans lately, and one needn’t do much more than take a peek at the music video for the song to understand why. The dynamic skillset of Binnendyk brings every stitch of audio to life in this three and a half minute slice of soulful modern pop, and while I admittedly came into this review expecting a lot out of “Brick by Brick,” I wasn’t expecting to hear what amounts to an intrepidly stylish track with a lyrical warmth that is literally unlike any other that I’ve heard recently.

Binnendyk starts off slow in this song, building up the tension using a blanket of instrumental melodies as a canvas atop which she’ll paint a vivid picture with her words. One by one, different components are introduced into what eventually becomes a multilayered master mix; there’s a little guitar here, a dusting of percussion there, and before we know it, we’re literally surrounded by a tidal wave of harmonies that could easily drag us asunder were it directed to. Fortunately for us, Binnendyk calms the storm with her sincere serenade, and we continue on in this patchwork of plush melodicism uninterrupted.

The instrumentation gets simply chilling in the chorus, and though I am a huge fan of this singer’s set of gilded pipes, it was the hook in “Brick by Brick” that got me addicted to the track. The video for this single doesn’t interfere with the hypnotic nature of the music at all; contrarily, Binnendyk makes certain that every shot stays out of the way of our direct route to the rich tonality of the track. She doesn’t have time for Hollywood-style theatrics – she’s far too busy casting her spell with the seductive harmonies that adorn her every word.

In general, I think that the video for “Brick by Brick” is really dreamy, and truth be told, it’s kind of eclectic when compared to its conservatively-arranged source material. It might not be the most action-packed of the summer, but it’s still sporting one of the most elegant soundtracks of anything to hit airwaves since the season got started. One thing I will say is that, in regards to the video’s film quality, “Brick by Brick” is top of the line, and I even think that it looks a little sharper than some of the major label content to make headlines lately.

Usually when a single gets the amount of buzz that this one has I become skeptical about its legitimacy, but in the case of this new effort from Rebecca Binnendyk, listeners can rest assured that they’re getting Grade-A pop music gold in “Brick by Brick.” This singer, songwriter and social activist is doing amazing things in the studio as well as out in the world around her, and my gut tells me that this most recent release isn’t going to mark the only time that we’re talking about her work before the decade expires.
