Applications, advantages, and all that you wanted to know about compactors

To save the environment from the harmful effects of human-generated waste, recycling waste is the most viable option because it reduces the volume of waste that goes to landfill. Reduced waste going to landfill means lesser emission of harmful gases and chemicals released from the garbage, which reduces pollution of air and water as well protects the health of people too. Another benefit of recycling is that it helps to convert waste materials into new usable materials and objects which reduces the load on natural resources and helps in its preservation.

Handling a large volume of waste is the biggest challenge faced by waste management agencies as the available area of landfill and waste disposal is not only limited but much less than the volume of waste generated. Segregation of waste by separating the recyclable items does help to reduce the volume of waste to some extent, but still, the volume of leftover waste is quite high that needs further reduction. To reduce the volume of waste further so that it uses minimal space during its disposal, waste management companies like Recycling Balers use some recycling equipment like compactor. The equipment derives its name from its operational feature that can compress recyclable and waste materials into small bales that are easily manageable.

What is a compactor?

Compactors are machines used for compaction of recyclable materials like cardboard, paper, aluminum and plastic into blocks for the convenience of handling and transportation. A compactor is usually a large rectangular machine that runs on hydraulic power, but the shape and design of the machine can vary according to the needs of recycling. The size of the compactor determines the size of blocks or bales that it can produce. Although there are different types of the compactor, normally the vertical compactor is most preferred for recycling. Some small horizontal compactors are also available in the market that can produce tighter bales that fetch better price from recycling companies.

Revenue earning machine

Recycling of waste materials provides the opportunity of saving on expenses by cutting down on the need for waste disposal and creates a stream of revenue by converting waste materials into some usable products for sale. This would not have been possible without compactors and the reason why many people look upon it as a revenue-earning machine.

How a compactor works

To understand how a compactor works look at a car compactor used for crushing cars. The machine can convert a car into a flat sheet of metal and plastic by pressing it directly from the top. Another type of baling compactor commonly used for cars smashes the vehicle from four sides resulting in the creation of a rectangle. Any equipment that can crush materials to convert it into bales is as good to earn the name of the compactor.

Types of compactors according to its application

Compactors are available for residential and commercial purpose. For residential use, hydraulically operated manual trash compactors are most suited as it can effectively reduce the volume of household waste, including polystyrene. Industrial applications of compactors require large size machines for handling a large volume of waste material of different types. Retail and service industries, as well as construction industries, find compactors most useful as it can handle a large volume of waste materials generated from the process that is not possible to recycle. Compaction of waste materials sent to landfill or disposed of by some other means reduces the volume considerably, thereby making it more manageable.

Types of commercial compactors

Industries consider compactors as important equipment that helps to improve employee efficiency and save on waste hauling costs. Commercial compactors can be of various types like Stationery Trash compactors, Self-contained trash compactors; Chute fed compactors and indoor stainless-steel trash compactors.

Stationery Trash Compactor

As the name suggests, a stationery trash computer remains affixed to the ground at a particular place on the site, and there is an arrangement to remove the container for emptying. From landfills to supermarkets, everywhere you will see the use of stationery compacters. Most stationery trash computers are suitable for dry waste handling. But some models are available that allow you to store liquid waste too. Some compactor models have a PLC-controlled power unit and indicator lights and can run on solar power or a gas-powered generator that reduces the dependence on electrical power.

Self-Contained Trash Compactor

Self-contained trash compactors are ideal for places that need to maintain a high degree of sanitation and cleanliness. Departmental stores, motels, clinics, nursing homes, and quick-serve chains are some of the places to use this type of machines for waste management. The compactor design suits both indoor and outdoor use and capable of handling wet and dry waste with the same degree of efficiency. From large recycling centers to government entities and small business, all kinds of establishments can use self-contained trash compactors handle all kinds of waste from cardboard to plastic to aluminum.

Chute fed compactor

This kind of compactor is best suited for high rise buildings that face a tough challenge in handling the waste. Chute fed compactor is highly efficient and tailor-made to suit the requirements of users by considering the waste management goals of apartment owners together with specific architectural and engineering specifications. The equipment consists of a hopper to feed the trash that falls into the compactor and then converts it into bales. The compactor is ideal for operating within small spaces at office buildings, hospitals, and nursing homes.

An indoor stainless-steel trash compactor

An indoor stainless-steel trash compactor is the best choice for eateries, restaurants, hotels, and school cafeterias that involve kitchens. The stainless-steel construction helps to maintain a clean and hygienic exterior that is easy to clean and looks good. You can use a small bin to collect the trash and put it into the compactor which when full, will compact the waste that you can collect in trash bags and put it in dumpsters for periodical removal.

Besides helping to maintain good health and hygiene, compactors save money by reducing the trips of trash pickups as well as minimize the volume of the trash, which saves the environment too.
