INTERVIEW: Sarah Lawton

Hi Sarah, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey Vents! Thank you for having me today! I’m doing good thanks!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Malibu”?

Yes, my latest single is called “Malibu” and is love to talk to you more about it…

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

This song was actually written by Ben Goldsmith, Emily Reid and Tori Tullier. I wanted to really open the net when searching for my next single and something I’ve never done before is accept songs from other writers but this time I’m glad I did! As soon as Malibu was pitched to me, I just knew I had to record it!

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Filming the video was a very long day but it so much fun! I basically got to have fun with my friends all day and drive around in a cool car with the top down! Not a bad day at the office! We got the perfect sunset too for the video which the director was super happy about. The video was really well planned from start to finish beforehand so when it came to the day everything ran pretty smooth.

How was the recording and writing process?

Recording a song that I hadn’t written was a little challenging at first! I knew I loved the song and knew exactly how I wanted it to sound, and I could definitely relate but it took me a while to really absorb it and make it my own. I had a great producer, Pat Lassiter, help me with that. We explored many different ideas and visions for this project to make sure we got it exactly where it needed to be.

What role does Nashville play in your music?

Nashville plays a huge role in my music! I still have to pinch myself sometimes that I get to live here and make music with incredible musicians for a living. I learn so much each day from being in such a creative and inspiring city that I always feel I am growing and evolving and becoming the best artist I can be.

How does Shania Twain and Dolly Parton stills influences your writing?

I’m a huge Shania Twain and Dolly Parton fan! I have been since being a little girl. I would memorise their songs and lyrics and practise singing and performing them all of the time! I love strong female artists who are great role models, they make me want to always keep going and inspire younger girls then me to help pave the way for future females in this business.

Having opened and collaborated with so many icons in your career – how does these experiences have influence your music and yourself as an artist?

I think as an artist every experience you go through should influence you in some way. I’m so lucky to have had some amazing opportunities yet always worked hard for what I wanted and been very dedicated to my craft. The music I’m recording now and all of the great things that are happening are all from hard work and perseverance and following my heart. I think as long as I stay on that path more great experiences will follow that I can learn and grow from to keep making music and performing.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes, there is more new material!! I have a follow up single to Malibu I am so excited to share! I’m always working on new material and the best part is getting to share it with fans.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I can tell you the song title is “Stubborn” and it may be hitting the airwaves either later this year or early next year!

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes! We will be hitting the road August 11th on the first leg of the radio tour. We’ll be heading up to New York first where we’ll be visiting radio stations and also opening for Jerrod Neimann on the 15th at the Ramada Inn, Watertown.

What else is happening next in Sarah Lawton’s world?

This year seems to have been the busiest yet! I get to go on my first radio tour in the states and also some other huge news is that my husband and I are expecting our first baby in November! So lots happening right now! And we are so excited and thrilled about it all.
