8 Dental Care Tips for Healthy Teeth and Gums

Everyone wants to maintain healthy teeth and gums as who likes to get dental procedures done by the dentist? Good oral hygiene is the only way you can avoid your frequent trips to the dentist and save a lot of money. Neglecting your dental care would ultimately lead you to get expensive dental procedures like dental implants done.

Dental problems cannot be ignored as most of the time the pain is intolerable, hence, we have listed the most important dental care tips you should follow for healthy teeth and gums.

  1. Brush Daily but Not Aggressively:

Brushing twice a day is recommended by the dentists but we would go as far as saying that try to brush your teeth every time after you have consumed sugary or sticky stuff. If that is not possible, rinse your mouth after the consumption of such food items to avoid cavities. But, do not brush too hard or use hard bristles as it may cause the erosion of tooth enamel. Be gentle and use a soft-bristle brush instead to avoid tooth sensitivity.

  1. Floss Every Day:

Flossing has been known to remove plaque and bacteria from places like between the teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach. This helps in removing food debris which prevents in the long run from tooth decay.

  1. Use Dental Products Containing Fluoride:

Use dental products which contain fluoride as it helps prevent cavities. Many kinds of toothpaste and mouthwash contain fluoride but there are dental products which may not contain them hence you may be skipping it altogether. Remember brushing and flossing is not enough to get rid of cavities. 

The fluoride is so important that communities in the US have started adding fluoride to their water supply as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

  1. Use a Mouthwash:

Mouthwash contains antibacterial which can help control plaque. A few types of mouthwash also contain fluoride which can help prevent cavities, and painful mouth ulcers. But make no mistake, mouthwash cannot replace brushing and flossing. Also, do not use excessive mouthwash as a few of them contain chemicals which can remove the tooth enamel if used excessively.

  1. Limit Sugar and Starch Intake:

We must all have heard from our parents that too much sugar can cause cavities, well it is true and sugary items stick to your teeth more causing cavities but so does starchy items like crackers and chips hence optimize their intake and brush or rinse your mouth after you eat them.

  1. Drink Water After Meals:

Drinking water after your meals will rinse off the food deposits from the teeth easily rather than waiting to be removed by brushing or flossing. Drinking water immediately makes it difficult for bacteria and plaque to grow. And water is beneficial for your health also, so it is a win-win.

  1. Quit Smoking:

Smoking is injurious to health which you already know but it can also cause gum disease and makes your teeth yellowish with a bad odor hence quit smoking if you are doing it already.

  1. Visit a Dentist Regularly:

Getting checked by a dentist is absolutely important because it helps in preventing any dental issues as usually if there are any oral issues developing, you will not experience the symptoms immediately and by the time you do, the issue must have escalated. Visit a dentist every six months for good oral health.

Most of us do not take dental hygiene seriously till we face any major dental issue but you really do not want to experience such discomfort and pain hence spend a little time every day to take care of the health of your teeth and gums and you will lead a dental trouble-free life for a long time.
