H. Kink’s Lisa Rieffel: Hiya, Vents. Best day of my life.
Can you talk to us more about your single “I’m Nice Like That”?
Man these questions are easy! Pffff.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It was a celebration of my imperfections, of which, are … *checking my notes* … many.
I know that’s so truly difficult to believe.
How is the video for the single shaping up and what’s the tone/theme?
I’m pumped you asked. It’s WILD.
This was the first time Timm and I directed together. I almost fucking punched that dude.
He thinks his ideas are so cool but they aren’t.
The song comes off your new 8/16 album Wish I Were Here – what’s the story behind the title?
It’s a little bit sad, isn’t it?
Hey…just like me! Coincidence??
Making this record, I found myself in a trance-like state.
My thoughts were completely consumed and I wasn’t available to anything or anyone else.
Can you describe the recording and writing process?
Yes! Again, next time please make these questions slightly more challenging. I’m almost bored here!
What role does the LA scene play in your music?
818 till I die! Anytime I need any inspirado, I take a 5pm drive down Magnolia Blvd., which is obviously the LA scene you’re referring to, right? Right?? The valley is beautifully dreadful, and the most inspiring place in all of Los Angeles, maybe even California.
What is it about the 80s aesthetic that you find so fascinating for your sound, look and videos?
It’s scuzzy and glossy at the same time. That’s really hard to do. It’s neon and hairspray. Glossy lips smoking cigs.
Sorry, the edible is starting to kick in.
How do you manage to balance your love of retro with your more modern influences?
I mean, I don’t. I just know I will listen to Dolly Parton and Oliver Tree back to back in my playlists.
What aspects of loneliness, sex and other such matters did you choose to explore on this album?
The kind of loneliness where you are completely surrounded by supportive people who love you and only try to help you, and you still feel like a total island. Alone, disconnected and screaming into space.
This goes hand and hand with my ever-present anxiety and my newest friend, insomnia… which I explore on “No Brainer”.
As for sex, I’m always down to visit Bone Town.
Where else do you find the inspiration for your songs and lyrics? Are there particular tracks on the album that stand out to you?
Not to be a total bummer, but look around. Our world is falling apart. There’s cages… cops killing people, rampant lying from all sides of the establishment… and oh yeah, the bees are dying.
I HAVE to write in order to categorize the feelings I’m having. That’s what “Make Noise” is about. No longer accepting these terrible things that we can actually change.
Any plans to hit the road?
Heck yes. Getting a touring band together as we speak.
