Hey y’all, Thanks for having me! Very grateful to be featured on your publication. I’ve been great, thanks for asking. 2019 has been a very busy year, allowing me new opportunities and taking me to new places.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single ‘¿Como Estas?’
¿Como Estas? is a fun, exciting summer track that I wrote while sitting in the laundromat, haha. My friend/producer, nïko, texted me the beat after sending me like 3 others and was like “but… DID I SHOW YOU THIS YET?” and the beauty of the melody really caught me off guard and I fell in love with it instantly. He always sends heat and good vibes, but this one really spoke to me and after I wrote the topline in 15 min, the verses just filled themselves in.
Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?
Well, I’m 18, so you know when you’re young and trying to make it in life, you gotta take time out to enjoy yourself. Basically what I’m saying is I talk to A LOT of girls, haha. There was this one girl, who has no name, that really had me sprung, so I just always tried to reconnect with her and I could never think of what to say without sounding desperate. Neither of us can speak Spanish but sometimes we’d joke and say the few Spanish phrases we knew so I just started the conversation with “¿Como Estas?”.
How was the recording and writing process?
I LOVE the creative process of making my brand of music and having full creative control, so I would say that this was the part that I had the most fun doing. I write all of my music spontaneously so, at that moment in the laundromat, I just caught some major inspiration. Maybe it was seeing my clothes spin around in the dryer that I saw as a metaphor for how life comes full circle or some other deep thing, haha! I also record my own stuff so that gave me another level of control, such as layering my vocals in my style and allowing me to translate my vision as intended.
What else is happening in Drew The Kiiid’s world?
I recently did my first show in Milwaukee with Indiana Massara for over 4000 people! The energy and chemistry was so amazing and her team was great. I definitely see a bright future for them.
I also just got accepted into The Remix Project’s Chicago location and that’s basically a 9 month artist development program that REALLY helps with getting artist ready for their careers in music, Drake’s brand OVO plays a big part in making this happen and the program is doing a great job at connecting artists with industry power players and influencers.
Who is your musical inspiration?
I take inspiration from so many genres and artists but I would say my top 5 would be Drake, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, and Jhene Aiko.
If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?
I would definitely want to collaborate with Ms. Lauryn Hill, no doubt. Her versatility and efficiency in different skill sets are legendary and she seems so wise and down to earth. Miseducation is in my top 3 albums of all time, fasho.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given in your career?
The best piece of advice I’ve been given in my career definitely has to be what one of my mentors, Greg Monroe, told me when I first started out which was “Learn the business, kid!”. I’ve carried a business mentality throughout my career and that has definitely saved me from a lot of situations that could’ve haunted me for a long time, but also it’s given me more respect when working with older collaborators and new opportunities.
If you could perform anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
I would love to perform in Dubai, honestly. Dubai seems like such a luxurious place and everyone there would love a good show. I’ve also never been out of the states besides a cruise to Mexico, so that would help get my passport some tattoos.
Does the new track mean we can expect new material in 2019?
Most Definitely. I’m always working to create the best content for my fans so you can definitely expect some new tracks from me often and I’ve always wanted to make a cohesive body of work so maybe even a project early next year.
