INTERVIEW: London born, NYC based writer and producer Jamieson

Hi Jamieson, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello. Thank you for your support. I have been very well.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Change The World”?

Change the world is the single off of my EP titled the light. It’s an uplifting, positive feel good song encouraging people to be the best versions of themselves. By making small changes we can make big differences.

The track is produced by Mantra and features the talented Edmerald.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I think it was a culmination of things. There are a lot of artists out there with huge followings I don’t think there is enough positivity in the messages in their music. I wanted to write something that could inspire and uplift. I had the weird idea that if I were to die, what message could I leave my future kids that reflect me as a person. That’s how the lyrics to the song came about.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes. I’m going to Medellin Colombia 🇨🇴next week to shoot the video for change the world. Very excited. First time I shoot a video outside of NYC. Going to try and knock out some charity work while I’m out there too!

How was the recording and writing process?

I changed a lot of things with this project. I have a stash of songs and I normally pick the best ones and make them into an EP.

with this project I spent a lot of time selecting the beats making sure the sound was current but also staying within the parameters of my style. When it came to writing I would light a candle and pray and sit and wait for inspiration. Sometimes I’d sit and wait for hours and only write 2 lines that probably didn’t even get used lol. I went through a lot of candles lol. Eventually it all came together in those few months of writing. Thank God.

I recorded the project in London which was fantastic  because it’s my hometown and I’ve never recorded a whole project in London. I normally record alone with an engineer but for this project I recruited One of my closest friends KINETIK who is a music junkie and recording artist. He has a very good ear and I could trust him to executive produce the project. He made me work hard in the studio so his new name is #Quincy (Quincy Jones) lol.

What role does NYC play in your music?

NYC has become home. Most of my stories and experiences on this EP have happened in NY.

How did your musical perspective change when you moved from England over to the City that Never Sleeps?

Before moving to NYC I had very little knowledge of the music business. I came to NY and got an internship and learned a lot about the business aspect. Being a British rapper in the land of Rap music I felt I had to prove a point. A lot of my early work in NYC was very hard hip hop very lyrical and wordy. Even though my forte was probably telling stories. After a few years of proving I could rap etc I went back to what I was best at, I started making real songs I became a lot more honest in the songs and that really allowed me to reflect who I was as a person.

How does your Latin background influences your writing?

I’m half Colombian and half Scottish. Sometimes I throw in some Spanish in my rhymes makes me stand out a bit. But on this project there isn’t as much Spanish as I would have liked. I think the song “Glue” has the Spanish at the beginning. Maybe in the future I’d like to work on a Spanish speaking album.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I have an EP Called “The Light. The 7 track EP is out now. And Change the world is the song I’m using to promote the EP. it’s my best work to date.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Out now!

Any plans to hit the road?

I Would love to. My Spotify listeners are growing every day in countries I’d never thought I’d reach. Maybe I’ll hit those countries in the next few months. I love performing live.

What else is happening next in Jamieson’s world?

Living life grateful to be doing what I love. Focusing on video and content to promote this project.  I’m Already listening to beats for a new project. I’d like to have that recorded within the next few months. So I should really start looking at candle wholesalers 😂
