INTERVIEW: Janelle de la Rosa

Hi Janelle, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi! I’ve been doing great. Thanks so much for having me.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Thinkin’ Bout You”?

“Thinkin’ Bout You” is a fun, flirty, come-and-get-me love song. As my debut single, this song means a lot to me because not only is it the first song that I’ve released, buts its also the first song I’ve ever produced 100% myself from start to finish. Plus, it gives fans a great first impression of who I am as an R&B and Pop artist.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I wrote this song about my experiences with love, desire, and longing. I think these are feelings that everyone can relate to and has felt at some point in their lives. I really wanted to write a song that allowed me to express my sensuality in a colorful, fun, approachable way.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Filming this video was a lot of fun. From picking out the best motels with heart-shaped bath tubs, to sprinkling rose petals everywhere, to shopping props and wardrobe, it was a blast. My videographer, Ian Jared Bell made me feel so comfortable and really helped capture me at all my best angles and moments. We planned every shot together and really made the song come to life exactly how I envisioned it.

How was the recording and writing process?

I wrote, recorded, and produced “Thinkin’ Bout You” myself from beginning to end in my home studio. I write all my demos acoustically first, and then bring them to life with full scale production. Writing the song is always the easy, fast part – producing the song, especially as a beginner, took so much time. I’m a perfectionist, and I’m also learning, so it took me a while to get it exactly right.

What role does Baltimore play in your music?

As someone who has performed in and around Baltimore for over eight years, my city has been the source of a lot of inspiration. I started listening to R&B because of people I met at shows. And now, I’m an R&B artist. Plus, getting to meet all the creatives in the community helps keeps me focused and excited about what I’m doing.

How did you go on balancing your love for old school R&B with your much modern influences?

I love listening to older music because it paved the way for artists like me. I wanted my sound to be a blend of old and new – something that feels familiar, but also feels contemporary and fresh. I’m an old soul, and I wanted to show that to modern audiences in a way they could relate to.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material? How’s that coming along?

Absolutely! I will be releasing a music video and a new single on all digital platforms every month indefinitely. I’ve finished writing and producing my next four songs, and have already filmed two additional videos. I can’t wait to share them.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

My next single is called “Make Up Your Mind” and is set to release Friday, July 26, 2019.

Any plans to hit the road?

At the moment, my focus is mainly on building my online presence on social media, Youtube, and Spotify. While I don’t have official plans to tour, you can always catch me at one of my acoustic shows in and around Baltimore, MD!

What else is happening next in Janelle De La Rosa’s world?

Pretty soon, I’ll be creating a subscription service where people can subscribe and get exclusive content from me. I’m also working on some killer merchandise. But most importantly, my fans will be getting new music and videos from me every month! I’m so excited for the world to see what I’ve been working on.
