INTERVIEW: UK Pop Artist Knight

Hi Steve, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi there, yeah really good and yourselves? Thanks for having me on.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “M.L.A.”?

M. L. A. Is a song about the current trend of denying feelings until it’s too late. It focuses on that keeping it casual, friends with benefits type situation. It’s stands for (sweet) Making Love Affair as opposed to sweet little love affair, something that I feel is pretty normal these days.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I guess the whole friends with benefits situation is something we are all aware of. In particular, it’s the point when one person has caught feelings and the other refuses to acknowledge that fact and wants it to all remain chilled and non committal. That point where one side can’t continue in the same way and the whole thing comes crashing down.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Would love to get a video going, have got a live one recorded when I headlined Notting Hill Arts Club so that could come to light shortly after the release.

How was the recording and writing process?

Writing process was great, learned some jazz chords on the piano and that became the chorus and the subject matter was prevalent to me at the time so was quite easy to write lyrically.

Recording process was equally great, I have a fantastic band and producer so the process went smoothly (if maybe taking slightly longer than anticipated). It was recorded in Urchin Studios and the engineer (Dan) was a great help. We did 7 songs tracked in one 10 hour day so seriously utilised the time we had!

What role does London play in your music?

London is my hometown and the amount of music that’s coming out of here is incredible. There are so many places to be inspired and after playing the london scene since I was 14 I really love the vibe here. I’m also working with a load of really exciting artists as a writer producer so the talent that’s coming out the city is massive!

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

So as I mentioned I’ve got 7 tracks done at Urchin studios. I’ve picked the 4 strongest and should have an EP out at the end of the year.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The next single I’ll be releasing will be called “Heartbreaker” and we’ll see how this initial release goes to decide on when it should drop.

What aspect of love and relationships will you get to explore on this record?

This song is about the grey area in a friends with benefits type situation. It’s the point where the feelings are not balanced and one side refuses to continue. I was on bbc radio talking about this exact issue and it was established that as long as you’re honest and open, a situation like this song wouldn’t happen. That’s just a lil heads up for anyone who can relate at the moment haha!

Any plans to hit the road?

Organising a big headline show sometime in August in London, so keep your eyes out for that!

What else is happening next in Knight’s world?

Well I’ve just moved from west to east london so am gonna be playing a lot more round here. Will be prepping for the EPs release and hopefully have some cool gigs and support slots coming up.
