Make Your Place Cozy and Comfortable Using Insulated Glass

Do you want to live in a warm and comfy space? Everyone does. We want to keep the heat in during winters, and out during hot summers. It can be achieved by insulation, which ensures that you are at the ease inside the four walls of your home.

What Is Insulation?

Insulation is best defined as a material that acts as a barrier between the inside and outside temperature of your home by preventing a significant gain or loss of heat. Insulation will not only affect the convection or air flow of your home but the heat transfer as well.

Thermal energy leakage is an issue in the majority of homes that causes discomfort and a fall in the efficiency of energy. Therefore, homes are insulated to prevent a drastic rise or fall in heat while saving energy.

How Does Insulated Glass Work?

Insulating your home using a double glazed window allows you to brighten your home while conserving energy. Double glazed glass traps inert gas between the two panes creating a vacuum that prevents the heat from diffusing on either side of the building or room.

Why Is It Named ‘Unit’?

The name Insulated Glass Unit (IGU) originated because the double panes work as a sealing system which cannot be substituted for another individual. In order to function properly, the components in an IGU depend on the performance of the other.

The Parts Of An Insulated Glass Unit

  • Gas: The gas, used to diffuse the heat transfer in an insulated glass unit, varies with each manufacturer. Most prefer using inert gases individually, while others may decide to use a combination of two or more gases. Krypton and argon are commonly used to create the vacuum between the glass panes, separately and mixed, both.

  • Glass: The type and thickness of the glass can vary in each IGU. If your priority is the strength and safety of your home, then you can use a tempered or laminated glass. If excess sound and heat insulation are needed, you can also use more than two custom insulated glass panels. However, the price of a custom size glass panel may vary with the number of glass panes you use when installing an IGU in your home.

  • Spacer: IGUs are designed in a way that they require a spacer to separate the double glazed glass where it meets the frame of a window. The spacer you install will carry a desiccant such as zeolites or silica, which will soak up the moisture present in the vacuum and hence avert fogging. The spacers used may vary in width depending on the inert gas used between the panes and the type of the window frame. A wide spacer will although will cost you more, it will be far more efficient than a cheap one.

  • Window Frame: Different types of insulated glass are often used to prevent a significant heat transfer between the indoors and outdoors. Skylights double hung windows, casement windows and even picture windows all are custom replacement insulated glass panels which you can utilize for higher energy efficiency.

  • Sealant: To prevent the insulating gas from escaping the vacuum, sealants are used to keep them in place. You can use a primary sealant such as butyl to ensure that the spacer and glass are airtight. Moreover, you can also utilize a secondary sealant for greater structural integrity. It is highly advised that you use either poly-sulphide or silicone for this specific purpose.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Insulated Glass Units?

  • The gases used to create a vacuum between the two panes are insulators. It allows you can enjoy the hot summers and cool winters. You don’t need to fret about the inside of your homes- losing or gaining excessive thermal energy.

  • If you are living in an area which is too noisy, you can install an insulated glass unit. The insulated glass has the properties of high soundproofing.

  • You can also ensure that you are living a healthier life by adding a custom double pane windows to your home.  It reduces the amount of condensation at your space. The lesser the condensation, the drier the atmosphere of your home. Thus, paving the way for a healthier lifestyle.

  • IGUs offer increased security as they are sturdier than normal glass and tougher to break.

  • As the inert gases prevent the transfer of heat between the indoors and outdoors, you will no longer have to worry about draughts or cold spots in the house.

  • Installing double glazed windows is like making an investment in your home. Sometimes, custom sized insulated glass might be costly. But its promise of greater energy efficiency will reduce your bills in the long run.

  • If you use double glazed panels with glass coatings, you will conserve a greater amount of energy, benefiting the environment. Also, you’ll be in compliance with commonly implemented building codes.

  • When compared with single paned glass, IGUs stand out for they can ensure protection against the snow and wind load.

What should be the Prime Location For IGUs?

It is important to understand that not every side of your house will require a custom glass window replacement. In most cases, a single panel glass will suffice. For instance, the windows on the south side of the sun will directly receive the heat of the sun whereas; the windows on the north side will not be exposed as much. It will prove to be more cost-efficient and practical for you if you install double glazed panels on the south facing sides of your home.

How Cost-Effective Is Insulated Glass?

IGUs promote consistency in temperature indoors. As the heat transfer is kept in check, you will not have to run the furnace during the cold weather or the air conditioner in hot summers. It will automatically reduce your energy bills while keeping you comfortable and cozy. You may find the initial costs to be higher than when installing single-paned windows. But, the reduction in your bills, in the long run, will prove to be fruitful for you.

Moreover, you can use secondary glazing as a temporary and cheaper alternative to double glazed glass. You can add a simple plastic, film or glass pane is fitted adjacent to your window to have the same impact as double panes. However, though cheaper, these custom window glass replacements are not quite energy efficient.

Custom Insulated Glass Panels for All Kinds of Places

From homes located in tropical areas to your office space, custom insulated glass panels can be installed everywhere.

  • IGUs are commonly used in tropical countries to keep the heat out during the daytime in the summers.

  • Custom size insulated glass may also be installed in factories where consistency in temperature is required.

  • You can also use double glazed panels in conference rooms, entertainment centers, and recording studios if sound insulation is your priority.

Before renovating or building a new home, be sure to evaluate your need for double glazing. Hotter climates and noisy areas are best served with IGUs. However, discussing available options with your council planning is always good.
